Safest parts of the Strip to walk?

I'm travelling to Vegas in a few weeks and seem to be reading more and more about the homeless on the Strip and also some CD Scam. Been to Vegas 7 times before, but this is my first trip for 6 years and as I'm travelling solo I feel like I'll be an easy target for trouble walking up and down the Strip. Which are the safest parts - and which are the worst - for walking around the Strip?

The only area I would be leery of is near the Stratosphere after dark, which shouldn't be in your normal "strip-walking" anyway.

Hundreds of thousands of people come alone to LV. There is nothing to worry about. Just simply ignore the folks that are pandering CDs or asking for money or whatever.

The LV strip is one of the most heavily policed areas in the country. No reason to even remotely worry about it. Take the same precautions you'd take traveling to any other city.

The walkways over the traffic (street) tend to have the most panhandlers. Example: MGM walkway to NY NY hotel, etc.

If someone tries to hand you a CD, don't take it, they're looking for a 'donation' from you. I didn't see this is Vegas but did in LA.

Im solo most trips and Ive learnt to just ignore them . I even look them in the eye when I have to say " no thanks " and ive never had a problem .

Everywhere in the strip is always busy........... even the walkways so don't worry about anywhere .

I'd consider "the strip" to be from Encore on the north end to Mandalay Bay on the south end. There's a bit further north than Encore, but some dark stretches where development has stalled. You'll be find in that main stretch as long as you keep your wits about you.

Avoid contact with anyone who tries to hand you something - CDs, porn slapper cards, whatever. And those "characters".

Thanks for the swift replies and info. Used to the porn slappers from previous trips so hope a similar approach is enough with scammers and the homeless. I just don't want walking around to be a worry throughout the trip.

It will only be a worry if you go out of your way to make it one.

I didn't find any of the main part of the strip unsafe, but I would of course be aware of your surroundings and personal belongings (no big open purses, etc -- you know the obvious stuff). By the end of my week long vacation in August I ended up saying "I got one yesterday" was a good response to the CD guys. Of course I didn't, but after all the hundreds of people they see a day I'm sure I blend in with all the rest of them. They also seem pleased with that answer whereas the "no thanks" that I started out saying to mostly to the "want dinner & a show?" people didn't get a great response. They would sometimes try to walk along with you to change your mind or something. I took to saying "I'm leaving tomorrow" was another good response. Ignoring them sometimes worked for me sometimes I felt like I just had to say something to get them off of me and on to someone else (sorry to the people behind me!).

I tend to avoid the areas in front of Margaritaville/Flamingo - in general, I don't usually walk along that side of the strip except down around Venetian/Palazzo and Wynn/Encore. It just seems more crowded, with more porn slappers and people in general (especially weekend nights). That said, I almost always go to Vegas solo and have never really felt "unsafe" - just take the usual precautions as noted above. If you are female, get a purse that you can wear across your body, rather than an over the shoulder one. I have a "Vegas" purse that I can wear across my body and I can keep it close when the crowd gets really thick.

You don't need to say anything to anyone. If they're trying to make a sale, do you really think they're going to waste time talking to someone that isn't responding? And if they follow you, oh well. That's on them.

People tend to be too nice. Telemarketers know that. Even with caller ID, people think they have to pick up the phone when an obvious telemarketer is calling. Just let the phone ring.
