Rental car or not

Hi,

We are getting 2 couples in our mid 30s getting to Las vegas on thursday Nov 7 at 10pm, leaving monday morning, staying at Trump.

We do not want to over plan, but we might want to stop couple of hours at the outlet, my wife might want to go to a gun range (I know, she is a redneck!!!), we might also want to spend a day at red rock canyon or hoover dam, but again, those are all ideas or possibilities, we will see when we get there.

Only thing for sure, Love on saturday 7pm, I would like to eat at Barrymore friday night, maybe happy hour before Love at PJ Clarkes, and Lotus of Siam on sunday.

Now the question : should we take a rental car (120$), or just go with cab and skip the red rock canyon hoover dam. I feel that just with the taxi ride from the airport and outlet store (which I am almost 100% positive we will do), rental car might be a good idea

thanks for your help

The combination of wanting to do things off-strip and staying at Trump make the car rental a neccessity. Using public transportation would waste to much time considering all you want to do on a short trip.

I personaly don't think you are going to be in town long enough to worry about Hoover Dam and Red Rock, There is so much to see and do just on the strip and downtown that those side trips would swamp you. Just my opinion...

You are there for such a short time....you really won't have time to go to Hoover Dam, etc. We rented a car and were there for a week and barely used it. Getting a cab is easier than trekking around parking lots.

You can do Hoover Dam, provide you get there early before the busses and their occupants get there. Early is the time when you can get unobstructed photos. It is an easy trip from Las Vegas. Just don't spend too much time there; it isn't overly impressive. Don't take any Dam tours either. And bypass the parking garage and park in the free parking areas.

You can add in a Red Rocks, or better yet, a Valley of Fire State Park trip and still be back at your hotel in time for a nap before dinner.

Rental cars are economical in Las Vegas if you self-park, which is free. If you are using valet several times a day and tipping as you should, then all of a sudden that 120 dollar car is costing 200+ dollars with tips and fuel.

I would imagine you would walk from Trump to Mirage to see LOVE. It isn't that far. Same with Barrymore's and you should a stroll to the iconic PepperMill for breakfast one morning. It's in the area.

Make sure you get downtown to the Fremont Street Experience one evening to see what is down there. It will very much help make the rental car a good choice. We normally park at Main Street Station for free.

I would advise passing on the national parks, too. But for a longer trip, yes, this would be the type of itinerary that calls for a rental car.
