Does going to Red Rock Canyon have to be a whole day event?

We will be renting a car and have never been to Red Rock Canyon. I am wondering what is a realistic amount of time (from The Strip and back) and taking the scenic road through the Canyon?

We are more interested in the views and vistas, than tours and hiking. Also, we're not the kind of people who stop every 5 min. to take picture, read the roadside signs, and spend lots of time in the Visitor Center. We may however, stop at the Red Rock Casino to check it out and look around a little bit.

Given that information, what is the potential drive time there, time spent in the Canyon (Scenic Drive), and drive time back to The Strip?

Red Rock Canyon is a great diversion from the strip. It's a good 1/2 day adventure, but since you aren't into hiking or taking pics, you can probably do it in 2 hrs, give or take a few mins.

It's a great diversion from the strip without taking up too much of your time. You can do there and back in a few hours.

Minimum 2 hours including there and back driving (30 minutes + each way). Although if the weather is nice, you will want to park and walk just a bit.

A nice combination with a visit and meal at Red Rock Casino.

If you do the visitor center (which is a good one) it takes about an hour.

If you do the road loop (and no hikes or picnics) add another hour. If you do a lot of photo stops, etc. add another hour.

So for -park, I would figure 2 to 3 hours - there are wild burros/donkeys in area and I have found myself spending some time just enjoying their antics....so that might add some time.

Red Rock Casino is a good one. Plan on lunch or dinner; great place to play (I like the area), and if into movies, a good movie theater there. So by itself Red Rock Casino could take another 1/2 day. The pool area is outstanding - but alas you need to be a guest.

have fun.

However

Personally I like to take my time so it usually is about 4 hrs total for us.

We did the drive through Red Rock in September and we stopped several times for photos and we were done in about 1 1/2 hours not including the drive there and back. We also stopped at the Red Rock Casino and really liked it and plan on staying there for a couple of days in the future.

Thank you all for your replies. This is just the information I was wanting. Sounds like a half day activity (give or take a little).

Yes, allow yourselves 1/2 day for the excursion. You may find you will finish your visit sooner but you may want to make just one more stop for just a few more pictures.

Enjoy.
