Las Vegas: Dec 26 - Jan 4

A couple of us are thinking about a vacation in Las Vegas during the holidays since we have the week between Christmas and New Years off. Because each holiday falls on a Wednesday this year, we could have a long week there. Thing is, we haven't visited Las Vegas before aside from the airport. It's been a good, but crazy year this year, so we want a week + of relaxing, taking it easy mixed with doing fun stuff.

Some ideas:

a) get tickets to Cirque du Soleil's O

b) enjoying delicious food

c) renting a car to visit the west rim of Grand Canyon (1-2 days)

d) gambling

e) watching fireworks on NYE

f) seeing a couple shows

Not sure where which hotel we should select, as I bet we'll opt to watch fireworks from our hotel window, sipping champagne, rather than going outside to celebrate. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Good idea s Vegas will empty out after NYE. The next day it will get quiet and prices will change

Check www.lasvegas.com for shows.

Fireworks will go off at midnight 5hotels do it..very cool

Strip closes down @ 6:00 PM or before.

Good place to stay MGM, flamingo, Mirage, Caesars.....

Enjoy

I was surprised to see how much hotel room rates increase leading up to & including NYE. Some rooms triple in price. Guess it makes sense that prices drop in January after the holidays are over and people like me head home.

Thus far, I've looked at The Venetian and the Mirage. Don't think I want to spend so much to stay at The Bellagio. Have to keep looking!

Be prepared to pay crazy high prices for your hotel on NYE.

ere are a few thoughts regarding the Grand Canyon. In theory you cannot drive to the West Rim because part of the entrance is a long stretch of dirt road. The terms in any car rental contract is that you cannot take your vehicle on dirt roads. If you damage the car or get stuck you are financially on the hook. The West Rim is closer to Vegas and is a more touristy attraction. (Some describe it as a tourist trap) It is on an indian reservation and they have hefty fees for most attractions. It sounds like you are considering an overnight, you would do much better to visit the National Park at the South Rim. It is almost a 5 hour drive each way, but its beauty and grandeur far surpass what you will experience at the West Rim

We are going during that same time frame and a few days past. Rooms from the 2nd to 6th are extremely cheap if you book now. Check out smartervegas.com for good discount codes on shows and restaraunts. If it is your first time then maybe you dont want to get stuck pre booking a lot of shows and being boxed in on what you can do. There are a lot of discount tickets around the day of shows that you can pick up while you are there. We have found out especially the first couple of times we went that sometimes you just want to be free to roam around, see as much and enjoy as much (party) as you want.

I've heard wonderful things about the Venetian. I hope you have a great trip!

Last night, we decided not to schedule too much. We got tickets for Cirque's O and that's it. We also want to walk around and take in Vegas at a leisurely pace. If there's a show we want to see, a couple people have suggested buying discount tickets on the strip, which sounds great. NYC sells tickets to shows and performances at a discount, as well.

I also read that many Vegas hotels & casinos close their doors at 11:00pm on NYE. Can you imagine being outside drinking and needing to pee. Yikes! We'd rather watch the NYE fireworks while sipping champagne in our room. Let others enjoy the chilly celebration outside, if they want. We'll pass.

We're also going to rent a car and drive to the Grand Canyon. I've been there a couple of times, even spent an amazing couple of weeks hiking for a couple of weeks and rafting down the Colorado River. But he's never been to the Grand Canyon. It'll be covered in snow in early January and it'll be spectacular! Besides who wants to hike in the snow?

We decided to cut our trip short after reviewing Vegas prices btwn Christmas and New Years Eve. I've travelled a fair amount and cannot reconcile spending $600 for a room on NYE - much less the cost food. I know you can choose a buffet, if you want, but we won't eat $35 dollars worth of food for any meal.

We save $3,000 flying home 12/30/13. Five days & four nights in Vegas will be enough. Spending NYE at home is a far better & less expensive alternative. We're travelling to Turkey/Italy next year - and unless we win the lottery - we have to budget time & money accordingly.

I hear you.We are going for four nights the 26-30th and we can do the entire trip for less than the NY night alone. You are right it makes much more sense to go earlier.I have been once at NY it is totally jacked up price wise and the streets are like Woodstock wall to wall people. We were going back in the front of Flamingo, they were checking keys and guy in front of us did not have key and he puked allover the guard and slot machine, yuk.Anyway after he was done they hauled him away to jail. You aren't missing alot by leaving early.
