Quick Summary of Solo Trip - Oct 26th - Oct 30th

I will post a quick summary of my recent trip to Las Vegas to attend a conference. Trip was mostly business orientated but managed to squeeze in some fun! Will post as a reply.

1st Day

I flew with BA from Gatwick to Las Vegas. Long flight but in flight entertainment is good and best thing about the flight is that you get in at 3pm so that there is plenty of time to enjoy the first day in Vegas.

I got through passport control and baggage collection qucikly but had to wait a little while for a taxi (at terminal 3). Now as this was a business trip I didn't bother telling the taxi driver "no tunnel" nor did I gave him a preferred route. Not only did he tunnel me but he went further up the freeway than he had to before turning and heading back towards the Luxor. Total taxi fare to the Luxor was $28. Taxi driver had a moan at me when I didn't tip him and then had a few choice words for me when I explained that I knew that he had long hauled me.

Luxor check in was very quick and the receptionist checking me in couldn't have been more pleasant or more helpful. The hotel itself is a little tired and in comparison to the newer luxry hotel it isn't nearly as nice but it is a perfectly good hotel, with good amenities and the room is clean and comfy. The lifts are a little rickety but I actually liked that.

I had no fixed plans for the first evening / night in Vegas so I just walked the strip and played blackjack at each of the hotels I stopped by. I went down to Mandalay Bay and then worked my way back up to Mirage before crossing the strip and working my way back down the other side of the strip. It was a very long walk but I enjoyed and overally my blackjack play was fairly profitable. For dinner I stopped into Earl of Sandwich. It served me a perfectly good sandwich but it wasn't anything to get excited about and I am not sure why this place gets such a good write up nor do I understand why there was a 30 minute line for food.

Favourite place to play blackjack was Cosmopolitan which had a good game, with decent rules (3:2 blackjack) and a swift cocktail waitress service. Overall I thought the who city centre complex was excellent. it was being constructed last time I was there so this was my first visit and if I get to Vegas again this is where I will stay.

Made it back to my hotel just after midnight by which time it was around 7am UK time and I had been up for around 30 hours. Was ready for bed.

2nd Day

Was awake fairly early at 7am the next day despite trying to force myself onto US time. This headed to the Mandalay Bay to register for my conference. Once that was out of the way I grabbed some breakfast and then went back on another walking tour of the strip. I wanted to continue my tour, do some shopping and grab some lunch before my conference started in the afternoon.

I ended up working my way to the forum shops and had lunch at cheesecake factory which was excellent. Once lunch was out of the way I headed back to my hotel to attend the opening seminar for my conference (I wont bore you with any details of that).

After the conference I met up with a colleague and her husband for lunch. We went to the Italian Wolfgang Puck place in Crystals Mall. It was just ok and fairly expensive for what it was. Would not recommend. After that we hit a bar for a few drinks. Went to twin peaks. Don't get those in the UK!!

Early nght beckoned as there was an early start for the conference the next day.

3rd and 4th Days

Both these days were dominated by the conference but at night one of the main sponsors at the conference took us for some client hospitality.

The first night was a Hakkansan where they provided food, booze and arranged for Penn and Teller to do a show. It was excellent.

Second night was dinner at Il Mulino at the Forum Shops which was absolutely fantastic. Would highly recommend going here for dinner. It was very very good. After that we headed to Hooters for a lesson on how to play craps, we needed somewhere with low minimum bet since some of us were newbies. Spent the next couple of hours giving away some of my blackjack winiings before switching to balckjack to make it back again.

Final Day and Final Thoughts.

Conference finsihed around midday and I had a 4pm flight back to London.

Taxi on the way back to the airport was half the price of the tax on the way to the airport! Good guy cabbie got a good tip.

Overall i enjoyed my trip to Vegas even though it was predominately a work trip. I really liked the new casinos and hotels at city centre, had great fun playing blackjack and meet lots of interesting people, 6:5 blackjack is way to prevelant and it should simply be banned, fewer "porn slappers" than I say last time, definite increase in beggars as well as an increase in people wearing costumes although I really liked them.

Would love to go back again, just hope it isn't another 4 years between trips!

I'm glad it worked for you, but I just can't combine Vegas and work. I know many use work as an excuse to get to Vegas, but as much as I love what I do, it is part of my every day world. And even though I am very happy with that world, Las Vegas is my place to get away from it for a while.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. Hopefully you won't have to wait as long for the next visit. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for your TR. I also belong to a work association that holds it's annual conference every second or third year in Vegas, so I've never had to pay for a trip there. I usually extend it a day or so before or after the conference, and bring my husband along to goof off with me a bit. That's enough Vegas for me!

So discouraging to hear about your cabbie long hauling you to the Luxor. I really hate to insult a decent cab driver with stating "no tunnel" (if that's how he would perceive it), but I'm thinking I may do that when I arrive in 2 weeks and need a cab to the Cosmo.

I like the people in costumes too, and the Luxor. Thanks for the laugh about your blackjack/craps/blackjack session, and going to keep in mind your Il Mulino recommendation. Great post - thnx!

Nice report. Shame about the tunneling thing but doesn't look like you let it bother you that much.

Hello

I enjoyed your trip as you explained your visit to vegas. The taxi is very disappointing to hear they just seem to get worse with the tunnelling. The fare to the Luxor of $28 is insane. Glad you did not tip him. Do you know which taxi company did this to you.You were very upbeat and made this enjoyable to read. Lets hope you get back to Vegas soon. I have not been for a work trip but you made it work out quite well for you. Are you ever able to stay the extra few days as some folks say they try to do to make the trip last longer?
