A trip report, sorta.

At the risk of getting beaten up for another taxi story, I offer this one:

We were headed to the airport, starting at the Gold Coast, and picking up friends at the Rio. Started off bad when, instead of heading behind the GC garage and crossing Valley View to the back of the Rio, he went west, out the GC entrance. Three lights and many speed bumps later, we picked up our friends. Granted, I didn't tell him how to get to the Rio, but really? When we got on Flamingo, don't all cabbies head for the I-15 on-ramp, and get off at Tropicana? Not this one. We continued east on Flamingo and, unbelievably, didn't hit a red light until Paradise. And then didn't hit another one until Tropicana. Meter was $18.10, which is about what you'd pay going I-15/Trop. I gave him $25, and said "Good job."

Your results may vary.

My point is, that route normally costs more like $25. That's all.

Some cabbies are good and some will give you the scenic tour or tunnel vision.

Let me try it this way: He long-hauled us to the Rio; then long-hauled all of us to the airport. Yet the green lights allowed us to get off pretty cheap. I don't know whether or not he did it on purpose, so I tipped him as if he didn't.

When you're hiring a cab, don't assume he'll go the shortest/cheapest route. Tell him which way to go. I got off easy. Others probably won't.

Thanks for the info, and maybe he just did what he thought was best, either way, good to know. Hope you'll write a report about your whole trip...?
