Day trip to Grand Canyon

We will be visiting Vegas between Christmas and New Year and would like to visit the Grand Canyon.

We would also like to do a helicopter flight

Can anyone recommend a tour operator that can arrange both?

Helicopter trips from Vegas will take you to what is known as the West Rim. It is a scenic enough place and you will likely have a fine day. However, the West Rim pales in comparison to the beauty and grandeur of the National Park which is found at the South Rim. The south rim is too far from Vegas for copters to make the flight. You need to either drive almost 5 hours each way or take a small plane. Many Vegas visitors settle for a West Rim visit because it is closer to Vegas. You are traveling half way around the world, it would be well worth your effort to take the extra time to see one of the great natural wonders of the world at the South Rim.

G'day Robyn

I know you want to do it by helicopter, but just consider this ...

Rent a car and take a two day, one night trip to the Grand Canyon. Stop off at the Hoover Dam and Seligman (on Route 66) en route. It's a 5 hour drive without stops; with those stops it's about 8 hours. Stay at Williams overnight and head off to the GC (Southern Rim - best, as Michael said) at 6am the next morning to see it at sunrise - awesome. Spend the morning at the various lookouts; head back to Vegas around noon and you'll be "home" for dinner.

It's a marvel of nature and absolutely awe-inspiring; and the trip will just break up, and nicely complement, your time in Vegas. Seligman and Williams are quirky little places and are the real America, as against Vegas, which is great, but it's all make-believe if you know what I mean.

Having said all that - check the weather forecast before you commit. We got caught up in heavy snow when we did that trip a few years ago in February. It slowed us right down but we were free-wheeling at the time - no time pressure. The upside of that was that we saw the GC under snow - beautiful.

And when you're in Vegas, make sure you have a little drink at Napoleon's bar at the Paris - great place.

The link from the fist post is for a tour that simply flies over the Grand Canyon, and it does not specify whether it is the West or South Rim. This would be the least desirable way to the see the Canyon. The true beauty of it needs to be absorbed in solitude as you stand on the rim. Continue to do your homework so that you understand where you are going and will not be disappointed.
