Can you do Las Vegas on a budget?

Hi Everyone,

Me and my husband would love to go to Las Vegas, but we don't have huge amounts of money to spend once there. Is it possible to not spend huge amounts? We don't really gamble, so we won't be gambling all day and night, just the odd flutter!

Is it worth going if we can't splash the cash?

Yes. Vegas can be done for $50/day/person or $5,000/day/person. It really does cater to all budgets.

You won't be able to see any of the fancy shows or go to the fancy clubs, but there are plenty of free/cheap things to do in Vegas.

Yes, in general you can find affordable rooms. And there are places where you can eat for cheap. If you are not going to gamble, what do foresee doing? Indeed there are many shows and clubs, but they can be pricey. Are you looking to camp out at a pool most of the day? For me, Vegas is primarily about gambling. Yes, you can visit there and not gamble but I don't know how long you want to spend just hanging out.

If you give more specific info you will get more he helpful suggestions. Give a dollar amount of what you consider to be a budget room. When do you plan on visiting? How long were you thinking of staying? What are you looking to do; shop, people watch, visit the Grand Canyon.

Yes, its possible to do a Vegas trip with a very small budget. You're not at all specific about what you mean, though, so I can't really say if your proposed budget will work or not.

Sounds like you're a first time visitor, and I think staying on the strip is the best choice. The cheapest hotels include Casino Royals and The Quad at the very bottom, then (roughly) Harrah's, Flamingo, Bally's, NYNY, Excalibur and Luxor. Check lasvegasadvisor.com and smartervegas.com for discount codes.

Food is available at all price points. A number of hotels have food courts with various fast food restaurants. There are also a number of fairly low priced sit-down type restaurants.

Drinks can be expensive. But you can buy beer, wine and liquor at numerous stores on the strip. Most hotel gift shops also have alcohol. You can make a drink in your room and you can carry open drinks on the strip.

There are shows at a lot of different price ranges. If you're not too picky, check out one of the numerous tix4tonite booths and see what's available.

Yes, without a doubt. If you have set money aside in getting there and a decent hotel then the cost of being in Vegas can be done on a budget. If you forego the higher end restaurants and shops and avoid clubs then it should be fairly easy. I am by no means loaded and I alternate my Vegas trips between doing things on the cheap and other visits splashing out a bit.

Have a set gambling amount daily, eat in places like Earl of Sandwich or the Cheesecake Factory or the typical chain type places (although Vegas has tons of cheap eateries all over the place) and just walk walk walk........you can spend you day just taking in the sights and sounds and you will be surprised where your day goes!

There are loads of posts on the LV forum about doing things on the cheap or even for free - do a bit of research and you will see how it can be done. That's the good thing about Vegas, it can be done on a budget.

When you go is a key component of how much it will cost. If you can go during the week, generally flights and hotels are cheaper than incorporating a Fri/Sat into your stay. Also, there are several large conventions in LV, easily found by searching online, that raise rates. If you can avoid those things, your money will go much farther.

Also, it sounds as though you've never been to LV. Your first time, you can easily spend 2-3 days just walking around and checking everything out on the strip, without really having to spend money to do so.

If you search through the threads on here, there are many places listed to get cheap drinks or food. Incorporate "happy hours" into your plans if you want to try out some places that you may not be able to afford a regular, full meal at. There are some great deals available.

Yes you can. There's plenty to do without spending mass cash. Get a decent room and make sure you've got money to eat. Relax and see where the day takes you. If this is your first time you will know how to prepare for your next time. Enjoy!!!

May to Sept , if you enojy sitting by the pool and/or swimming, you can spend time enjoying the pool and visiting the various casinos ( some have spectacular layouts that don't cost anything to see (e.g. Canal and gondolas in the Venetian, the fountains at Bellagio etc.).

Sorry, I should have explained more. We plan to go for 5 days and would probably have about £100 a day to spend. We will gamble, but just a dollar or two at a time! It's just somewhere we have always wanted to go. More to just look around and take in the sites. May also do some trips if possible, but need to have a look what else there is to do apart from gamble.

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, we do it every time we go. As others have said, timing is everything. By avoiding weekends and busy times, you can get a decent room (including resort fees) for as little as $50 a night. When my daughter and I go, we gamble very little (she is incredibly unlucky). There is so much to see for free. Non busy times you can get very cheap tickets for the Mac King magic show at Harrah's he is very good and very funny. We eat a small breakfast, good lunch, then fast food at dinner. One of our favorites is Earl of Sandwich at Planet Hollywood and the Miracle Mile shops there are some of our favorites as far as shopping. 50 bucks pp a day is pretty much what we spend.

Watch for a Southwest sale. Got to www.smartervegas.com and look for hotel deals. You can spend days just walking around Vegas looking at all the sights. It can be done very cheaply or very expensive.
