staying downtown

is it worth booking a hotel downtown for one night during our 7 night stay?

going with my boyfriend from uk. Second time to vegas however never made it downtown on our first trip. Both late 20's not sure if that matters? or is it easy enough just to get a taxi back. Also is downtown safe at night?

Not really. It's a quick taxi ride from the Strip and cabs are readily available.

Fremont Street is definitely worth visiting, though. Don't overlook the "Fremont East" area heading towards the El Cortez.

I've never felt unsafe, but stay in the lighted areas, under the canopy (unless you're heading to Main Street Station or the El Cortez) and you should be fine. Use normal common sense; don't get blotto drunk, don't wander off into dark deserted streets, be wary of strangers, etc. But you'll be fine.

we are having a 4 full day / 3 night stay and two of them are at NYNY on the strip - the last night will be downtown just to give our granddaughter a taste of staying downtown - she wants to stay down there and we like to stay down there so not a big deal for us to change rooms for a night. If I had 7 days though like you, I'd spend at least 2 nights downtown, myabe even 3.

Definitely worth visiting for an evening but the mornings are really dead DT. As said above, the transportation is easy and packing up for one night at a different hotel doesn't make sense when you have traveled a long way to get to LV.

You'll have no problem getting a taxi back.

The touristy part of downtown has grown well beyond the canopy. Don't be afraid to venture farterh afield. Look around... if there are lots of people and business, you are fine. If you suddle find yourself in a deserted ally with no business or people, turn around (duh.)

I feel safer downtown than I do on the Strip. Use common sense and you will be fine. I would definitely stay a night Downtown, but if you think you just want to spend a few hours, then hop on the SDX bus instead. Easier than changing hotels for just one night.

We spent the first night of our trip last month downtown and enjoyed it. We've visited downtown for an evening on previous trips and wanted to try staying there this time. Our only complaint was that we stayed at the Downtown Grand and didn't like it. We'll definitely stay downtown one night on our next trip, but will choose a different hotel.

If you rent/have a car it is no big deal IMO to split your nights between downtown and the strip. On our 5 night trip in February we will spend 2 nights downtown and 3 nights on the strip. On my previous trips to Vegas I found just about everything cheaper downtown: hotels, food... and enjoyed my time there just as much as the time we spent on the strip.

I would hang out Downtown for a bit but never stay there. The best offerings, The D, Downtown Grand, and Golden Nugget are, at least to me not in the same league as the mid to top tier Strip resorts that I stay at. Andiamo Steakhouse at the D being a major exception from what I am told. That is a must try.

When last I did walk around Fremont, it felt seedy and dirty. For example one block north of Freemont (Ogden) was basically dead aside from what looked to be a few bums. To top it off a few blocks south of Freemont is the Clark County Detention Center which to me means recently released criminals but to the hipsters that populate Freemont East means "adds color and charm" to the area.
