Best Sports/Race Book

Will be in Las Vegas for the Kentucky Derby and want to watch the race at a casino with a good sports book. What's your favorite location? We DON'Twant to be on the strip......we're looking for a good off strip or downtown place. Suggestions, please! Thanks.....

Some casinos (including LVH) have Kentucky Derby parties. They'll fit out a ballroom (or the theater in the case of LVH) with big screens, betting stations and various food options.

I would not expect to get seating at a sports book anywhere in Las Vegas for the event unless I was well known to the casino.

Most of the casino will have Derby parties. These are usually not held in the racebook, but in a ballroom or conference facility. While most will allow you to buy your way in, some will be by invitation only.

Off Strip we've only gone to the one in Orleans, which is held in a ballroom. It was fine, but not all that special.

Because it is one of our home hotels, Orleans would be our choice. But I would recommend also checking out South Point and Sam's Town, as both of these casinos stress horse racing for locals.

Unfortunately one of the few bad thing about Downtown: no real "good" sportsbooks

LVH is the best off-strip sportsbook. Be aware, the sportsbook itself will probably be filled VERY early that day, along with every other sportsbook in town. Just so you're not under the impression that you can walk in and you'll easily find a seat.

Filled VERY early?? For the Kentucky Derby?? I know things like March Madness and the Super Bowl would probably be pretty packed, but the Kentucky Derby??

Umaga: For those interested in horse racing, Derby Day is a big event, 2nd only to Breeder's Cup. I would have a spot reserved, and would still be there at 9am. It isn't just the one race, the entire day of racing is top quality. The races are all outstanding to both watch and bet. Most years my largest bets aren't on the Derby itself, but one of the other races.

In Las Vegas parlance, think of the Derby like you would the ACM Awards. All of the top singers are there anyway, so you might as well take advantage of the opportunity and stage a number of other events. All of the top jockeys, trainers, owners are in Kentucky anyway, so they might as well ship in other top horses and stage other special races.

In the morning the racebooks will all be packed with horseplayers that want to bet all the early races that start around 9am Vegas time. And very few are will leave. You have almost no chance of finding an empty desk at 3pm.

BTW: In Kentucky over 100,000 people will go to Churchill Downs the day BEFORE the Derby, to watch the 3 year old filly version of the race.
