A Mother and Son Trip Report (2/3 to 2/12)

First off I would like to say I have AS and because of that I tend to write in a very linear way. Some of you may find this boring because of that. Also just for those reading to know both my mother and I use canes. Lastly in case it bothers anyone I am not “straight”, I will make comments about some guys in the shows we saw.

From time to time I will post a link. That will be the link to my review of whatever it followed. Usually the review will be really short.

Day One 2/3/14

Our plane landed about 20 minuets early, which was nice. Got to car rental place and got a free up grade (because they didn’t have anything I was booked for). Every car we tried to take they told me I couldn’t have for one reason or another, even though they said pick any car in that row. It took about an hour and a half to finally get a car and that left both of us fairly mad. We rented from Dollar.

Next we went to our hotel, The Flamingo (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d9184…). Took about 20 minuets to get checked in. I thought it was funny that the person that checked us in name tag said they were from our home town. What are the odds of that? Anyways, we were offered the chance to get a Go Room with a Strip View for only $10 more a night. I turned it down and got a great room overlooking the Wildlife Habitat and High Roller on the 20th floor.

After getting settled we took a taxi downtown because I was scared I would get lost and I thought I might drink, which I did. It was about 5pm and the cab driver took us on I-15 to get downtown. We got dropped off at Binion’s and walk over to The Heart Attack Grill (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d2387…) just to try it out. It had decent burgers and was a fun place. After eating we walked the Fremont Street Experience for a few hours, shopped a bit and took pictures with a couple of characters. Overall we did not care for downtown. Too many out of control drunk people. After seeing all of the casinos on the FSE we caught a cab at the Golden Nugget and went back to The Flamingo. This driver took Las Vegas Blvd. on the way back and it was $6 cheaper. My mother and I disagreed about whether we were long hauled or not. She said we were; I said with us being in traffic during rush hour we may not have been. For fun I posted this as a question on Vegas Rover (a Facebook group and a website) for other opinions. It was about even on what people thought. We may have been cheated or not.

Once we got back to The Flamingo we decided we could eat again. I went to The Flamingo Food Court and ordered a whole pizza from Bonanno’s (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1741…). The pizza was huge, but tasted very bad. $33.50 down the drain. We garbaged about ¾ of the pizza it was so bad.

Day Two 2/4/14

Woke up and drove to The Gun Store (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d2233…). I wanted to shoot The Coalition Package. It was a fun experience and my instructor, Bob, was good. On the way back to The Flamingo for a rest we stopped at a store to pick up some soda for the room. After a short rest we drove over to the Bellagio to have lunch at their buffet (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4226…) which I had a MyVegas comp for two. It had decent food and MyVegas saved me just under $47. After eating we went to Bonanza Gifts (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1023…). It is a good place to stop in at. Most of what they have you can buy at other places around town, but they tend to be the same price or a bit cheaper. Mobility impaired shoppers beware the place is huge and there is only one place I saw to sit to take a breather.

After shopping we went back to The Flamingo for a short rest. After the rest I thought let’s walk to the M&M store (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1430…)since it is so close. Boy was I wrong. I did okay, but it about killed my mother. We caught a cab at The MGM Grand back to The Flamingo to get ready for our first show, Vinnie Favorito (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1308…), which was downstairs. I first saw Vinnie years ago and quickly found him to be hilarious, which for me is saying something. My autism keeps me from emoting much. This time I was worried on two accounts. 1) I didn’t know if my mother would find him funny and 2) I bought the “Fun Zone seats”. I wanted to be used in the show, but at the same time I am scared of attention being on me.

After the show we walked across the way to the food court. We knew to stay away from the pizza place so my mother had Pan Asian (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4100…) and I tried L.A. Subs (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4563…) . Again my mother didn’t like her food, but I thought mine was okay. The bread was a bit hard though.

Day Three 2/5/14

Woke up and drove to Mandalay Bay to use my MyVegas comp for a free glass and to have lunch at The House of Blues (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1187…). The food was good and we each ordered a drink that came with a glass. The total was $80, but I was happy I got my free glass and another one. After leaving MB we went to Circus Circus to play on the midway. The kids games were fun and since we only played games that someone had to win, and we only played against each other we were able to trade up to get bigger prizes. It was kind of like cheating, but it made us happy. lol

By the time we left CC it was time to go to Monte Carlo to get our tickets to see The Blue Man Group (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1834…). We had bought the VIP experience so we were really looking forward to this. I have seen BMG twice before so I knew what to expect, but my mother had little knowledge beforehand. I was hoping to get the spin art they do on stage, but at this show they give it away instead of selling it, usually to a kid. I was disappointed in that and I felt a bit cheated with the VIP experience. For $500 for the two of us I thought we would get more. See link review for more thoughts on the VIP experience and show in general. As for MC we both liked the place. It had a nice vibe and the casino was spacious unlike all the other casinos. If I ever make it back to Las Vegas I may stay at MC.

Day Four 2/6/14

Woke up and went to Harrah’s for lunch. We ate at their café (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1732…) and it was very good. The bill was a little over $32. After eating we went to get tickets to Mac King, but was told he called in that day and someone else was going to do his show. We decided not to watch that show so we walked around a bit until it was time for Big Elvis (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d6645…), which is a free show. We both had a great time and mom took some pictures with Big Elvis and bought a shirt, which he signed.

After Big Elvis we went to see what we could of The Linq, which wasn‘t much. Most of The Linq had not opened yet. I went inside of The Purple Zebra, but I wasn’t impressed. On the start of this trip I started a collection of souvenir cups. The Purple Zebra was full of different shaped drink cups, but they were so cheap looking I decided not to buy any there. I was disappointed because I had heard good things about The Purple Zebra.

For those that don’t know The Linq entrance is between The Quad and The Flamingo. We went back to The Flamingo and got our car to go to The Luxor to see Bodies (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1082…). I thought it was fascinating, my mother thought it was a waste of time and money. It cost $60 to get in and that was saving $5 each because I had a Mlife card.

From there, since we didn’t have a show that night, we decided on going to The Gold Coast to try Ping Pang Pong (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4921…). I had read in a few places that PPP was in the top ten Chinese restaurants in the U.S. We thought it was nothing special.

Sometime during the day my left big toe started to hurt. I found I had a small blister. At the time it wasn’t a big deal.

Day Five 2/7/14

My day started with a call from my brother. He wanted to tell us our home town was having a mini snow storm. We didn’t think much of it and started our day. We went down to the bell desk to rent mobility scooters because we were very physically tried. Both of us being physically handicapped we don’t do much physically trying things and my toe hurt from the blister. Long story short crossing the street to go to the Caesars Palace Forum Shops (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1025…) one of the scooters broke down blocking traffic. We knew we had to go back, which slowly we were able to. On the way there the other scooter started to act up. Once back at the bell desk we asked for a refund and got one.

Once again we tried going over to the Caesars Palace Forum Shops, this time by walking. On the way there my big toe was really bothering me, but I ignored it like a fool. We walked to the end of the shops to have lunch at The Cheesecake Factory (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4920…). It was good, but not as good as the one here in Oregon. After lunch we walked half way through the shops and went down to the valet to catch a cab back to The Flamingo. We were way too tired and hurting to walk back.

Back at The Flamingo we rested for a awhile. I got online and posted a picture of my toe on Facebook. I was told about a Minute Clinic in a CVS on the Strip so after my mother woke up we took a cab there because I didn’t want to drive on the Strip during the weekend. They would not see me because I am diabetic and I have a foot drop on that foot. I was referred to Harmon Medical Center Urgent Care. We grabbed a cab and went to the Urgent Care. They were closed and would be until 8am on Monday morning. Lucky for us our cab driver didn’t drive off right away so we still had a ride.

We headed to Excalibur because we had show tickets and a MyVegas comp for their buffet (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1173…). We first ate, then wished we hadn’t. It was by far the worst food we had in Las Vegas. Even at free (a $45 savings) I felt they should have paid us to eat there. Never again. After dinner because of my toe we sat in Octane, the bar outside the Thunder From Down Under Theatre, for a few hours because our show was not until 11pm and my toe was killing me. While sitting there I got up to go to the bathroom. On the way back I bought my mother a necklace and gave it to her.

It was now time for Thunder From Down Under (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d9508…). This was a show I was not really looking forward too, but my mother wanted to see it so I got us tickets anyways. When it was all over I was glad we did go. Even though the guys were not what I normally like a couple of them did have nice chests and the show was a lot of fun. I highly recommend the show and I recommend sitting as close to the stage as you can.

When the show let out it was close to 1am so we started to leave and go back to the room. I happened to look over and saw a display of custom bobble heads, but the store that sold them was closed. We went back to The Flamingo and crashed.

Day Six 2/8/14 aka my birthday

Woke up to another call from my brother. The mini snow storm they had turned into a large one. We were worried about getting picked up on the 12th.

Went to The Orleans for lunch. Their buffet (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4049…) was good as usual. Great food and price. Also it was nice that they have a cane, walker, and wheelchair lane to get in. As cane users and as a person with, by this time, a really bad sore on my toe I/we appreciated not having to stand in a longish line.

After eating we went shopping, including back to Bonanza Gifts, and some other places. We then went back to The Flamingo to rest. At 7pm we went to Paris for dinner at Gordon Ramsay Steak (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d3169…)for my birthday. The food was good, but everything else about the place bugged us. The music was too loud, the tables too close together (every time a waiter came to a table beside us their butts were in our faces), the food was small, etc. The place was not for us. The bill was $135.

After dinner we went to buy tickets for the Eiffel Tower Experience (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1270…). Since it was my birthday I got to go up for free. They also only charged my mother the senior price ($14) instead of the full price ($18). We also got lucky and they let us take the elevator up so we wouldn’t have to do a lot of walking and standing. It was beautiful up there and we were lucky enough to catch a Bellagio Fountain Show (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1270…).

When we came down we went out to the little bar out on The Strip to buy Eiffel Tower cups. Then we caught a cab back to The Flamingo. By this time I was having a hard time walking and my toe was purple.

Day Seven 2/9/14

Woke up and went for lunch at The Tropical Breeze Café in The Flamingo (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d6389…). I was in so much pain from doing that much walking we decided I needed a mobility scooter or I would have to stay in the room. Back at the bell desk we rented two mobility scooters and headed to The Quad to see the Auto Collection (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1254…). It was nice to see the collection, but even better to do it off my foot/toe. On the way out I happened to find some art pieces I liked so I bought them. That made us head back to The Flamingo to unload my stuff.

The Flamingo has a UPS Store so we got some boxes to package up some of the stuff we bought. We went up to the room and mom packed while I rested my foot, which still hurt from the little bit of walking and standing I had done. When mom was done we took the scooters down to The Venetian so I could get pictures of the gondola rides.

After that we went back to The Flamingo to get the car and go to The Wynn for dinner and a show. Dinner was the buffet (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d5981…). It was okay, but I had heard it was great. A hundred dollars later I learned it’s not. The show was Le Reve (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d6027…). It was everything we hoped for and more. The usher bumped our seats up to the VIP area, and she gave us each a program. Towards the end of the show she brought my mother a red carnation. The usher really made our night.

Once we got back to The Flamingo I wanted some food so I went to the food court and had Johnny Rocket’s. One of the best burgers I have ever had.

Day Eight 2/10/14

Woke up and went to the Harmon Medical Center Urgent Care to have my toe looked at. So far, so good. It’s just a rally bad blister at this point still. Told to make an appointment with my regular doctor.

From there we went to Silver Sevens for their lunch buffet (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4921…) . It was okay for the price ($24). After lunch we headed back to Excalibur to buy myself a custom bobble head ($130). Takes about a month to get it, if you okay the designs at each step right away. I have already seen the head of mine and it looks cool. After ordering the bobble head we went down a floor to Dick’s Last Resort (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d6648…) for drinks and some shrimps. We then went to The Flamingo for a rest.

Later that night we took the car to The Rio for dinner and a show. We ate at Village Seafood Buffet at The Rio for dinner (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d4791…). Best prime rib I have ever had, the rest of the food was decent, but not the type of food I was wanting. I don’t remember what it cost, but I remember not having a problem paying it.

After dinner we went and saw Penn & Teller (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d5531…). Good show, but nothing I have not seen off of TV. It was worth it though to meet them and collect some stuff that flew into the first row, where we were seated. It was also nice to get a free program for sitting in the first three rows.

Day Nine 2/11/14

Woke up and had bell service take our packages to The UPS Store. $155 to ship everything back. As a warning know that since the store is in a hotel there is an $8 fee for every 10 pounds your package weighs. My stuff was sent out Tuesday by ground shipping and I was told I should have it by Friday.

After shipping our stuff we rode the scooters to The Aria for the lunch buffet (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d1631…). On the way there we took our pictures with a few characters. At Aria I had a MyVegas comp which was nice because I thought the place was over rated. Saved about $50. From there we rode down to New York New York to look around. When we were done we rode back to The Flamingo and returned our scooters.

After a short rest in our room we walked over to Harrah’s again to see Big Elvis. After that back to our room so I could rest my foot/toe which by that point was very very sore. About 8:45pm we walked over to The Quad to watch Frank Marino’s Divas (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d2353…). I have seen a lot of people in drag, but these guys were the best. Their lip syncing was spot on. On top of that the Frank Marino Divas Dancers were very hot in every sense. I have never seen people dance that good before. The Dancers made the show for me. I still can’t get them out of my head and it has been two days since I saw them.

After the show we went to Hash House a Go Go (tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45963-d2325…). The food was good, but the waiter wouldn’t write anything down so he kept screwing up our order. We got back to our room about 1am and went to bed.

Day Ten 2/12/14

Up at 5:45 am to catch our flight. Had to fill up the car which was fun since we don’t do that here in Oregon. Returned the car without a problem then went to the airport. Mom got harassed by the TSA and I had a hard time removing my shoe from my left foot it hurt so much. After that we had a two hour wait. For about a half an hour we talked to a guy that worked for our airline. He was very nice and told us a lot about the food scene in Las Vegas. On the flight home mother and I got lucky and had an empty seat between us. That was very nice to me because I have a bad left knee and my travel agent booked me a left aisle seat which left me no room to stretch my knee out.

Anyways, I am glad to be home and off my foot. I hope I make it back to Vegas some day. There was some stuff I didn’t get to do since my foot was so bad and we had to rest a lot. I hope this trip report was worth reading.

Thank you for the detailed TR. How is your foot now?
