Groupon users... worth it?

I've been to Vegas many times (over 16x's) but only once in the last 3 years... when I first started visiting in '97 coupons were handed out by casinos, pit bosses, the dudes on the street, etc... now I read about Groupon and LivingSocial and wonder how many here stock up on them in advance of their trips.

Here's what I'm facing... I see some good deals for places like Toby Keith's (yes, standard fare but not a bad place to sit and chill), Dal Toro's and le burger brasserie - and I wonder if I should buy them and then obviously eat there even if they aren't places I would go if I didn't have the coupon. It's not like a $5 off that we get from a back of a book somewhere and if you don't use it - nothing lost. So my question is how much to you "groupon"? Do you only buy if it's something you might've already been planning? How do you get your savings in advance?

I think they're worth it if you know it's somewhere you want to go. Last trip I bought a bunch of coupons from restraurant.com when they had $25 for $2 and $4 knowing that if I didn't go it wouldn't hurt too much. Since Groupon is typically a little pricier, I would only buy a select few, close to where you'll be spending most of your time.

IMO There are two reasons to use Groupon or any similar services:

1. You are going anyway. I used one last year because they had a discount for a show I was going to see anyway. So I might as well save a few dollars.

2. You want to try someplace new, and this gives you a reason. This helps you decide which different restaurant to try.

Personally for restaurants I prefer restaurant.com. Groupons have to be used within a certain period, restaurant.com certs do not. So if I decide that I don't want to use the certificate this trip, I can just save it for next time.

I have been all over Restaraunt.com and Groupon, and intend to use them

$12 worth of food at Johnny Rockets for $6 (multiple locations, good quick eats)

$30 worth of food at Toby's for $15

$30 worth of food at Kerry's Gourmet Burgers for $15

$25 Gift Cert for Top of the World

$25 Gift Cert to Slice of Vegas

$25 Gift Cert to Strip Burger.

among a few others.

We are going for 7 days total, and I intend to use them, so yes, it is worth it.

excellent points... I definitely agree if you know you're going - then buy it and save! For instance I know I want to try Mastro's or Vic and Anthony's but aside from those two (and haven't seen any savings to be had for either place) nothing else is planned. Spice Market Buffet is also another offering on the Groupon and it's about 50% off including unlimited beer, wine, champagne...

thanks guys - off to check restaurants.com

I'll also point out that restaurant.com certs can be easily exchanged and they operate all over the country. They show 46 restaurants withing 15 miles of San Antonio.

Groupons in moderation are worth it. Last time we went we got too many and ended up having to give up doing certain things in order to use them all.

Groupon food coupons have been getting more limited...and frankly boring. Living Social had a deal at Blue Martini awhile ago. And, groupon does have a Rhumbar drink special. Travelzoo has a couple of upper end restaurants with deals. Truthfully, my "grouponing" is diminishing as the selection just seems to stay the same. The people working at groupon need to be more creative and find new deals!!

I much prefer Groupon to anything from rest.com. Yes I am paying a higher price, but I also do not have other minimum purchase requirements that come with it. What you see is what you get. If you do not use the groupon, you do not lose the 'paid' value - you still retain that after the 90 day full value expires. Also, Groupon carries a lot more venues in Vegas to use and has new ones quite often (example - Paris buffet with wine the other day).

We purchased Le Burger & Buzios (very good by the way - went there in December). Missed TK's supper one as that was sold out.
