what are your factors in picking a vegas hotel?

I am heading west in 3 weeks and me and my college buddy will be spending our stay at the Four Queens. I picked that location for a number of reasons. First for me (my college buddy really done'st care where we stay) is location this trip. I have been to vegas now this being my 8th time. In all of the previous stays it's always been either on the strip (Stardust/IP/Westward Ho) or off strip at the Orleans. This time I wanted to expereince staying downtown. Second came cost. If I can find a hotel that doesn't charge a resort fee I will pick it unless it's a down right dump which isn't the case with the 4 Queens. Overall if I can find a place to sleep and clean up then I am good with it...but I have wondered what other criteria others use when picking where to stay.

Depends on the type of trip. If it's a "boys" trip then we'll pick something less expensive but still nice, aka Monte Carlo, MGM, Mirage, NYNY or the GN downtown. Even then, I'm not in the "sleep and shower only" club; I like a nice room, with nice furnishings, amenities, etc.

If it's a vacation with Ms. DaveNJ, we pick something more luxurious, as the Ms. likes a nice room with a killer bathroom and fabulous pool area; usually Bellagio, Aria, etc, although we've done Red Rock Casino and enjoyed it very much.

Unlike some, resort fees do not factor into the decision, I just look at the total cost of the room. Cost is of course a factor, but unless there is a huge disparity we just pick the hotel we want to stay at.

Don't spend your effort looking for a hotel w/o a resort fee, just add it to the total cost and go from there.

I pick rooms on different factors for different trips. It used to be price, now it's comfort because I'm not one of those guys who says "nobody uses a room in Vegas for anything other than sleep, shower, etc." Location isn't a huge factor since I usually have a car.

I guess now I look for best deal at a 'nice' hotel. For my next trip, I do want a room with a steam shower!

A nice property

it's important what the property has to offer, by means of dining, gambling, shopping, etc, usually the MGM does it for us

A nice room

a wonderful view, usually strip, since I have mountains surrounding me.

a fun pool is truly at the bottom of my list

If you can find a nice quality hotel without resort fees why wouldn't you pick it and pay less?

Clean room and good basic facilities at hotel.

Location.

Price.

We don't go to Vegas to sit in a room and admire it.

indy there isn't a quality hotel on the strip that does not charge resort fees, unless one is in on a comp, I've never paid a resort fee, I was charged one for a night, but it was comped at the end of my stay, I'm a strip kind of gal, no not that way...lol! anyway, I'm sure everyone is familiar with the saying "You get what you pay for"

I have been to vegas alot, but I never gamble enough to earn any comps. As for staying on the strip, I have been there and done that and well....not that impressed. At the rate things are going, all will have resort fees except your non gambling hotels, which down the road is where I will probably end up staying, or at those that offer at least "reasonable" resort fees.

indy, you do make a point! All I keep hearing is "our economy is rebounding" well I don't see it much, here in the USA anyway, of course this is jmo! We make a pretty decent income, but I told my DH since we are very middle class american, we keep getting screwed by our govt, and if the economy is starting to rebound, why raise the damn prices so high on everything, from fuel to groceries going up, in just this past month alone! why raise the prices so quickly, if things are barely starting to look up? Anyway......I'll get off my soap box now.

So then what you'll do is add the RF to the base price of the room to get the total price to use when comparing properties.

There's nothing keeping you from doing this today, and it'll open up a wide range of properties for consideration.

IMO it's not worth it to me to exclude most of the properties that I prefer to stay in, just because I have to take this extra calculation step.

If you're making a point by not staying in properties that charge RF's, then that's certainly your right, but like 6:5 blackjack and lousy video poker paytables, most people seem not to care so I don't think it's going to change anytime soon....
