If there's any way you an drive yourself, we just did it, and it was so worth it. You get to see the sunrise/sunset, and not be in a hurry! 5 hours may seem long, but start early, its an easy drive.

Try to stay inside the park, so worth it!

Did it with grandcanyontours.com last fall and it worked perfectly. 3 + 24 hours in the park and all things we wanted to see were possible!

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Hi again,

Yes used the website, they assigned Yavapai lodge to us which was not bad but not the best possible in the park locationwise. Got 2 good bus drivers, day 2 was a different bus and different driver than day 1 as they piggyback these 2-day trips on the normal 1-day trip schedule.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Lots and lots. The free shuttle bus system inside the park is awesome. Firstly we went out around 5 PM (well it was late October, times of course vary with the season) to halfway the Western corner of the rim for sunset. Also saw impressive herds of moose on the way, the bus slowed down for making nice pics. Next morning we choose not to go for sunrise but to travel to the east point of the rim, with the mule farm, for some more nice pics - and walked to Mather point (one of the two vista points possible for the day trip) along the rim.

Hope this helps a bit,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

You're dealing with a tour broker. No way to know which coach company or drivers of course. The advantage of being there over night is the ability to witness sunset and sunrise. The downside is being limited to shuttle transports inside the park.

There are no moose at the GCNP. Those are elk. Also lots of deer. When walking in the dark it's best to carry a flashlight or head lamp. The critters will be walking with you.

Red, thanks for the wildlife primer -- I was puzzled by the moose reference! I've seen deer, but I have not seen elk (or moose) in the Park.

Farty, definitely get up and go see sunrise. As Red pointed out, sunset and sunrise are the highlights!
