Las Vegas - a family vacation?

A travel agent is trying to sell me and my wife on a "family trip to Las Vegas." She has explained that there are a lot of family friendly things to do off the strip, and some kid appropriate shows to be seen at the hotels. Can anyone comment on this? I'd be traveling with my wife and 14 yr old daughter.

Plenty of other family friendly destinations to go to. Stay clear of Vegas!

I think Vegas could could be part of a vacation in the Southwest. It can be a gateway city to some of our amazing National Parks; Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce. I suppose a couple of days of shopping, pools, and looking at the craziness of the city is OK. But as the sole destination, NO. Find a new travel agent.

I don't think it would be fun for any of you. There are other places a 14 year would much prefer. I'm not saying it would hurt her, but it's really not a wholesome atmosphere, and children aren't even supposed to be in the casino area. Sometimes they are because they have to walk through them to get to their rooms. The casinos are smoky and all manner of people are there. I see kids there, but I'd rather stay home than take a kids with me.

Our 14 yo LOVED Vegas....for an evening. We were making a stop an route to Zion, coming from California.

Make Las Vegas a one or two night stops and it will be fine.

People still use travel agents because as you know planning a vacation can be time consuming.

Having said that; I really don't understand why people say things like "don't expose your kids to the adult billboards" or "Vegas is for adults". Like the city itself was a bad influence; I think it just depicts the way parenthood is like these days, hate me for saying it, I don't care. Parents don't take responsibility anymore, they want the school to educate their kids, they want the media to educate their kids, video game violence to be banned... I believe education starts at home, and kids are exposed to everything you can imagine, even in what looks as the most friendly neighborhood. Sex, sexuality and those sort of themes appear in almost every TV commercial. Violence is a constant in the nightly news. You just can't try to keep your kids in a tiny bubble for their entire life. In my opinion, as long as kids receive a good education at home then there's nothing to worry about. Also, if your kids ask, don't lie, even about sex, it's easy to find all kinds of stuff on the internet now, even by mistake. Just tell them straight up what it is! Like I said, they will see all kinds of stuff anywhere in the world, not just Vegas. Avoiding talking to them it's not a way to handle it; and it seems parents usually try to avoid everything that might trigger that talk.... then kids get curious, and since no one told them what it was all about they start experimenting by themselves.
