Car or No Car??

I’ve booked NYNY next April for my wife’s 40th, we’re there from a Wednesday to Sunday and I thought about renting a car this time around. Our last Vegas trip, 3 years ago, we just cabbed it, took the bus or walked whenever we needed to get somewhere.

I guess my question is the hassle of renting a car worth it?

I don't think there's that much hassle in renting a car, but it depends on what you do in Vegas, and specifically whether you plan on drinking while on the move around town. I drive to Vegas, but once I arrive I very rarely if ever take my car back out unless visiting a local friend on days when I'm not having cocktails. You don't want to drive under the influence, and personally, I don't enjoy driving around Vegas much anyway, because of the traffic and the number of people who don't follow the no drinking and driving rule. I'll take cabs or walk while there.

It really depends on what you have planned. If you're barely going off the Strip you probably don't need a car. If you have plans for side trips around town, you probably do.

If you are going to be spending your time on the Strip or Downtown, you don't really need a car, especially in April when the weather is pleasant for walking.

You might also consider just renting a car for one day, if you have somewhere off-strip you want to go.

I agree with the others; it depends on what you want to do/where you want to go.

If you want to check out some off-Strip attractions, from Hoover Dam to Red Rock to the off-Strip casinos like Red Rock, GVR, M, etc, then you would want a car.

If you are looking to spend your time on the Strip and Fremont Street, then I wouldn't bother.

And of course if your activities include drinking, I would also skip the car.

As kt says, a middle ground would be to rent a car for just one day. Many hotels have car rental desks on-site.

Go to the internet & search free transportation Las Vegas. A lot of hotels have free shuttle rides to off strip sister hotels. If this doesn't get u where you want to go, renting a car might be the only option.

I could never drive in Vegas due to the fact that I drink wherever I am on the strip and I take tours because I hate to drive while on vacation. You should easily decide ,just on those variables, whether renting a car will work for you. good luck

I will give the other side of the argument....we always rent a car when in Vegas. We love the freedom to come and go as we please without the hassle of having to walk it, cab it or bus it. Valet is our best friend and we take advantage of it everywhere we go. I dont mind staying south strip (love the NYNY casino by the way) because if we choose to go down to the Mirage to play, we jump into the car and go to their valet and play as long as we want. If we want to go downtown to enjoy happy hour at MSS...we jump into the car and valet there....if we want to find a cheaper off-strip place to eat....we have that freedom. No long hauling worries for us lol.

Thanks everyone, great advice.

I think we might rent one just to have in case we do want to get off the Strip for a bit.

Silly question but does it cost more to leave it a your hotels valet or is it really just the tip every time they bring it up for you?

Valet is just the tip whether at your hotel or the one you visit. We typically always rent a car in that we enjoy the off strip properties and downtown and we enjoy the freedom the vehicle gives us. It just depends on the individual and as one poster noted, how much you want to drink.
