Son's 21st Birthday

I'll be taking my son to Vegas in December as part of a promise I made to him years ago. I told him when he turned 21, I would treat him to a trip to Vegas on my nickel. I've been going to Vegas since the 1980's but have always stayed and played downtown (I'm a serious low-roller). However, I recognize the realities here and will be staying on the strip for my son's trip. Yes, I know gaming is (a lot) more expensive as are restaurants and other activities.

I currently have a room reserved at NY NY that includes two coaster tickets and a $50 bar credit. We'll be flying in on the morning of Sunday the 14th and flying out the evening of the16th (Sun-Tue).

Part of the deal is a dinner at a restaurant of his choosing. Any suggestions I can throw his way? Neither of us are "fancy dress up for dinner" people, some something a little more casual (khakis and open collar dress shirt) would probably be in order. I was also thinking of a show one night. What's the best stand-up comedy show in Vegas? Any other suggestions for a dad and 21 year old son (no, I'm not going to a brothel.....)?

As for gaming, he wants to play blackjack. Knowing that the $5 3/2 games are basically gone on the strip, where an I find $5 6/5 tables?

Galaghers and broadway burger bar in NYNY as well as 9 fine irishmen are fine for casual dining. Can't remember the last time i saw 5$ bj, but you may get 10$ off hours at NYNY or MGM

Twin Peaks might fit the bill for dinner.

You can count on one hand the number of restaurants tht you might NOT be comfortable in khakis and a collared shirt, so no worries there.

Why don't you take your son downtown where you're more familiar with where to eat and where to bet?

AlanRTExas: We will spend a few hours downtown (where my guess is he will find some $5 blackjack.....) but he primarily wants the "Strip Experience" and this is HIS trip, not mine. That being said, the whole thing is going to be pretty fluid so who knows where we'll end up. The only thing I know for sure is we will NOT be in line together at a "velvet rope club" at 11:00 pm...... (DUH!)

How much do you want to spend on diner? There are some great places that you will be dressed appropriately in slacks and a collar shirt. My son likes Delmonico. Carnevino is another really great place where he can get the Strip vibe.

How casual is Gallagher's at NYNY? Do you need a reservation?

I second Broadway Burger, excellent burgers and fries. We like the NYNY for their casual food options, you can basically find anything you want there without having to leave the casino. Another burger joint we like is Burger Bar. Just a short 15 minute walk down from NYNY. It's located in the mall aread between Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

I'll bet you two have a blast. The "in a line at a velvet rope" - now that was damn funny!

There is at least 1 $5 6:5 blackjack table at all times at both NYNY and Luxor. While I don't normally condone 6:5 blackjack, under the circumstances, I almost understand. Outside of that, you should have no problem at all finding $10 3:2 tables on that end of the strip considering the time of year (and week) that you will be there. There might even be some $5 3:2 tables during the morning/early afternoon at Tropicana, Luxor, and Excalibur.

As for a show, Carrot Top would be a great show to take him to. That is assuming you both like to laugh A LOT!

NYNY is a great property, I am sure you both will enjoy it!

As for dinner, Wolfgang Puck's Bar & Grill at MGM is good. Very nice, yet casual.

Carrot Top for sure! My son (31), daughter (23) and I (49) went last September and laughed non-stop the entire show. We had a great time!!!
