Last minute questions

We leave for our first trip to vegas in 5 days. Staying at Mirage.

I understand about taking a taxi from airport to hotel and asking not to be taken via tunnel, but what about when we leave and getting back to airport, Do we need to mention not going via tunnel again?

We have applied online for players cards but obviously being our first trip don't have them in our hands, my Q is, should we get our Mlife cards prior to checking into our rooms and if yes is there a benefit to having it prior to check-in, ie...a different/shorter check-in line etc?

We will arrive around 4pm but won't depart until 6pm I'm not relishing the idea of checking out of the hotel and spending 5-6 hours waiting in the airport. I'm thinking we should just ask for late check-out but do I need to do this upon arrival or can I call at some point during our stay and request it?

We have no set plans for our 5 day stay, I did want to try and checkout the double down saloon-I like cool dive joints, any other cool only in vegas spots we should consider?

Any last minute advice/tips for this 40something married couple?

TIA for your reply

1. When you leave the hotel to go back to the airport just say no freeway. That should suffice.

2. There is no benefit to using your player's card at check in. For higher tier level M life card holders, people who have spent a decent amount of money, there is a dedicated check in line, but that won't apply to you. Just make sure you pick them up before you play any games in the casino.

3. Check out is at 11 am. If you ask for a late check out the night before or morning of you might be able to have them extend it to noon or maybe 1 at the latest, but your best bet is to check your luggage with the bell desk and enjoy the city until it's time to go to the airport.

4. Frankie's Tiki Bar is another good spot.

The dreaded tunnel only on exit from the airport. For new players card members there would be no advantage of having your player's card before check in.

No need to sit at the airport after check out - leave your luggage at the bell desk and then pick it up before you leave. Late check out depends on what day you are leaving, If you are leaving on a Friday, you will have less of a chance of getting a late checkout then if you are leaving on a Tuesday. Ask on arrival and again the night before - if at first you don't succeed try again.

The only Vegas dive I've been in recently was Ellis Island

"The dreaded tunnel only on exit from the airport. " - Not necessarily true, I was asked by the cab driver if I wanted to take the tunnel going from Wynn to airport. You can guess the answer.

Don't tell the cab driver what route not to take. If you ordered an omelet at a restaurant would you tell the waitress how you DIDN'T want the omelet cooked? Just tell the cab driver, "Mirage. Take Swenson, please". It is as simple, courteous and direct as that. Heading back to the airport? "We are heading to the airport. Use Paradise, please."

In a way, the Peppermill is a dive place. They are just north of Wynn (still an easy walk). They are a Denny's style restaurant out front and an "original ultra-lounge" in back. They even have a 1970s fireplace. It's ultra kitsch and a throwback to the days when the cool part of the strip was centered farther north (think Sahara/Circus Circus/Riviera etc... We stopped in last year and enjoyed the heck out of it. It is one of the places you have to visit to be able to check it off your Las Vegas list. The same goes with Ellis Island (think old people and karaoke and cheap steak dinners). It is behind Bally's on Koval Lane. An easy walk.

Late checkouts are more dependent on the day of the week than anything else. If you are leaving on a Friday or Saturday morning, don't expect much in the way of a free late checkout. By the way--some hotels offer a late checkout (or an early check-in) for a fee. I don't remember if Mirage is one of them.

You would only need your MLife cards at checkin if you are staying on a Myvegas comp as part of your stay. If you purchased other rewards (not a room comp) through Myvegas you will need the card prior to redeeming the actual prize.

If cabbie takes the tunnel without asking thats a fine-able offense

But I guess it all depends on if you want to push the issue when you get to your hotel or not

As others said you will not need your Mlife card to check in assuming you are not staying on a comp offer (which you obviously are not if it is your first visit and you don't already have a card). But, FWIW you will get Mlife points for the cost of the room - so either give them your number when you check in if you can - or sometime at check-out or before make sure they have your number recorded so you get the points for the room cost. It won't be a big deal but may give you a few express comps to use on your next visit.

@HuskerBB, a first timer can be staying on a comp if they play Myvegas.

Thank you all for the advice and tips.

I'm not staying on comps, I discovered myvegas too late for this trip.
