Craps/ Buy or place

I always place the 6 and 8 but I think I understand that it is better payouts if you buy the 4 and 10, even with commission or even the 5 and 9....can anyone give comment on this?

Place 6/8 1.52% HE. Buy 2.27% HE.

Place 5/9 4% HE. Buy 2% HE.

Place 4/10 6.67% HE. Buy 1.67% HE.

The buy % above assumes the commission is paid on wins only.

Thank you, other than asking the craps table staff is there anyway of knowing when commission is payable? always or just on wins? or is it a given that it is just paid on wins?

4.76% HE on all the buy bets if the commission is paid per bet and not per win.

Many places will charge per bet on the 5,6,8,9 and charge wins only on the 4/10.

It's always good to ask though.

Come bet is only 1.41% HE and is better than any place or buy.

While I agree with what's been said, it's worth noting there's a slight wrinkle to the description of house edge. The house edge percentage refers to each resolution of the bet (i.e., a win or a loss). However, some bets resolve more frequently than others, e.g., betting on the 8 resolves more frequently than betting on the 4. Thus, while placing the 8 has a lower house edge than buying the 4 (1.52% vs 1.67%), the house edge per roll of the dice is 0.46% for the 8, and just 0.42% for the 4. In other words, if you keep betting the numbers, you'll tend to lose ever so slightly less buying the 4 than placing the 8.

Place 6 and/or 8. Buy 4 and/or 10. Neither on 5 or 9. Best bets are pass/don't. Come/don't. Both with full odds if bankroll allows. Otherwise as much odds as you can afford.

Do NOT buy any number unless your bet is large enough that the vig is not overpaid. To me, at most casinos, that means I place the 4, 5, 9 and 10 until my bet has been pushed to $20 before I buy it.

If you buy the 4 for $5 and pay vig of $1, it is a lousy bet! Because the vig on a $5 buy should be $0.25. But most casinos do not deal with quarters, and would charge you $1 in commission.

Check to see if the vig goes up to $2 at $21 or at $39. Some places (supposedly) let you buy for up to $39 for a $1 vig! So you are better not pushing the bet to $40, but leaving it at $39.

This assumes that you are at a table with $1 chips as the minimum denomination. If you are on that computerized "Shoot To Win" game which pays to the penny, you should always buy the 4,5, 9 and/or 10 if you want to bet them, never place them.

Buy the 4 and/or 10 for $25. Never place 4,5,9 or 10.
