Texans hit Vegas hold on tight! TR Aug 24th to Aug 27th

A little background for those that haven’t heard my rambling for months. This trip was me Traci, hubs David, and my Uncle Buddy. It was me and David’s first trip - Uncle Buddy had been a very long time ago. This was a couple days or so stop on a week long plus road trip. Uncle Buddy was a last minute add as we had to convince him to come. There will be many more trips with him as we had quite a blast together. We drove in from Texas to Gallup then Gallup to Vegas with a couple of pit stops.

This maybe a bit long but I like details. The rest in posts ....

Sunday - Aug 24th - We made it into Vegas in good time - checking into The Orleans at about 5pm. No line at check in at all. The check in clerk was very friendly but I cannot remember her name for the life of me. We had told her it was our first visit and she fixed us up well. Uncle Buddy wanted a smoking room which she had ready for him, he wanted to be on the highest smoking floor with a strip view. She gave him an upgraded room on the 17th floor with the strip view. I had wanted to be near the elevator, up high and maybe a strip view. She put me in an upgraded mini suite on the top floor very close to the elevator but could only do a mountain view. We hauled all out stuff up - no valet or bellman for hubs. No we didn’t take up the yeti too darn heavy. The rooms were awesome just perfect for our needs. Comfy beds and very clean. Loved the security check in at the elevators - they made a presence without being overly obtrusive. I never checked out the pool but the guys went down to smoke and walk they loved the area.

Hubs was not really all that tired and a bit excited to hit the fun like we were so we all changed into evening clothes and off we went. We made our way to Caesars Palace and parked in the garage. Made our way over to the Roman Plaza and the Absinthe box office. We didn’t see anyone handing out coupons so we just got our tickets - the very sweet clerk slipped in a coupon which basically covered the tax. We book for the 10pm show. We then headed over the bridge to Margaritaville in the Flamingo. Can I just stop here and say - Wow Wow Wow. So many different people on the street and excitement. We decided eating first would be a good idea as we would probably not want to later.

The host at Margaritaville seated us right away they didn’t have the upstairs open but she did put us near a window where we could still see their volcano show. The food was very good. We had the lava shrimp for our free app. Then fried chicken, fish/chips, carnitas tacos. Our waiter Ryan was very prompt and made some good suggestions. The drinks - margaritas of course were strong and tasty. The volcano show was quite neat. Different from locations we had visited before. All kinds of dancing going on, a girl slid into a giant “margarita” then did one of those hanging from a hook acts and then a lua dance on the stage.

I had heard good things about the casino there so we played there a bit. The TR desk was closed so I thought I wouldn’t get my cool TR card but the pit boss did it for me. I found a 3:2 table with the poker side bet I like. The dealer was Jaime and she was awesome. I tripled my buy in of $60 and Uncle Buddy was up $40. Not sure what Hubs was up to. We cashed up chips in the Flamingo then started wandering towards the door - we still had some time so I spotted a bank of Hot Shot games. Hubs and I lost but Uncle Buddy who didn’t know what was what won $250. Crazy luck. It was getting abut 9:30 so we decided to go back over to the Roman Plaza. We still had a bit of a wait so we just found seats - more drinks and people watched until they were seating.

Absinthe totally lived up to all the hype and more. Uncle Buddy got us some of the signature Absinthe drinks - boy they were strong. I drank mine and hubs. Hubs doesn’t drink anything when driving. The show was absolutely amazing. We didn’t get a picture one - we had left the camera in the car so no pics the first night at all. We were too dropped jawed to even pull our phones out. If you like this kind of thing then go see this show so wow. One last thing on this I will say - I will never look at sock puppets the same again.

After the show we went into CP to make our way back to the car. Uncle Buddy and I were quite lit at this point. After a bathroom break we were back in the main lobby area. Well there had been a very curvy black woman pulled out of the audience during the show and was twerking on a little asian girl. Back to the lobby - Uncle Buddy decides to do a reenactment of this right smack in the middle of the lobby. If anyone was in CP on this night and saw a 65 yo man twerking away it was him.

We played/drank a bit more slots at CP as the tables didn’t look appealing. Not sure on winning or losing at this point. There was another twerking at the ticket machine - I guess we won since we had tickets. Back to the car and back to The Orleans.

Hubs was done and went to the room. Uncle Buddy and I tried a double deck table but the dealer was kind of a dud. Surprising. From here we parted ways and things are a bit fuzzy from there. I know I made it back to my room but really not sure how or when. Uncle Buddy told me at breakfast he had to get help from security as he knew his floor but not the room number.

4. Re: Texans hit Vegas hold on tight! TR Aug 24th to Aug 27th

Monday - August 25th - Up and about 9am. We headed towards Excalibur and parked there for the day. Found the M Life desk - Dave and I got new cards and cashed in MyVegas vouchers for breakfast. While we were doing this Uncle Buddy found a slot and won another $100 bucks or so. Went up and had breakfast at the Roundtable buffet no problem using the vouchers. $15 bucks for all three of us. Breakfast, unlike the reviews here say, was great - I mean its just breakfast really. They had a great omelet station which worked for Uncle Buddy. Hubs found his usual. I was able to get toast and fruit. All just fine. Drinks were self serve but no issue there as we were pretty close.

Played our way back to the area where the bus tour was to pick us up. Uncle Buddy won more $$$. The bus was 20 minutes late but we later learned they have to hit the same traffic anyone else does. Only issue here was the pick up area was not shaded at all so we were in the blazing sun. Caught the tour there no issue with using our online vouchers but we had to keep up with a paper receipt all day - wrist bands would be a better option for them. We rode up top taking plenty of photos and see sights from up high. We got off at the switching point which is Circus Circus [they have one daytime tour in two parts Strip / Downtown] We decided a cool off was in order. I went to the players club desk while downing tons of water. Got my card and win chips voucher. The boys were off. Uncle Buddy went to play were he could watch the circus acts and hubs ended up at Slots of Fun. I went to the cashier got my win chips. I bought in with the win chips and $50. Table was 3:2 - I forget the rules but must have been good because I stayed and won $500. We all met up at Slots of Fun and caught the downtown tour just outside. Rode that whole tour then came back to CC and caught the other half of the strip tour. We hopped off at Miracle Mile Shops stop. Walked over to the other side of strip and started back toward Excalibur. We then realize it is 5pm and we hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast.

We were right there and Hubs is a big fan so Bobby’s Burger Place it was. We didn’t get our burgers with the chips. We just got burgers and drinks, I also got a boozy milkshake. Uncle Buddy got some sort of grilled ham sandwich. It is at this point we learned that iced tea in Vegas is not the same as at home. The boys had sodas and I had water and my shake. The burgers were great - Hubs said he would have gotten a second one if he wasn’t so overheated. Service was great and clean restaurant.

By this point we are pretty cooked. So we thought we could walk though NYNY and get close to Excalibur self park. No such luck but it was cool inside. We did like the giant moving sidewalk into Excalibur. Back to The Orleans.

We went up to the rooms with the idea that maybe a quick break and shower. Well I guess Hubs and I passed out because Uncle Buddy called and woke us up a bit after 8pm. Oops a great sin wasting Vegas time sleeping. We get dolled up for the evening and headed downtown.

Parked at Binion’s then went for a wander. Hubs and I got players cards then cashed in some ACG casinos. While doing this Uncle Buddy was winning more $$$. We got our million $$$ photos. Then played/drank a bit there. Binion’s was not the nostalgic place I had hoped it would be very old and tired. Our cocktail waitress looked like she rolled out of the crypt to come to work.

We then got more drinks in approved plastic cups and wandered Fremont St. what a great vibe this place had even on a Monday night. We listened to bands and wandered about watching performers and other people. Disgusted at the amount of children/”parents” in this environment and time of night. There is truly no excuse anyone can give me for children of any age to be downtown past dark. Anyway we went in The D as I had more coupons to use. I also knew hubs would like the upstairs from tips here. We got our players cards and cashed coupons. Guess what Uncle Buddy did? Yes won more $$$ while waiting. The boys went upstairs and I tried some 3:2 bj with just a $60 buy in. Well that lasted about 15 minutes - rough rough table. Went upstairs with the boys to play the quarter non ticket machines. Tons of fun with hubs while Uncle Buddy didn’t get it and bounced between the bar and playing. Mostly drinking. He did break the non talking to strangers in Vegas rule a couple times. Especially some shady character supposedly from LA - I think he would have ripped Uncle Buddy off had he been alone. Hubs walked over and sat beside him and the slime ball went a way. We played for a couple hours or so up there. Really liked the top dollar machine and pinball machine. Uncle Buddy like the Sigma Derby. Uncle Buddy won $$$ again. We then went downstairs out to the street again. Uncle Buddy sees one of the pit dancers he thinks is cute and he is quite drunk so he decides we are going to play roulette. [So he could watch her lol] Now none of the three of us know how to play roulette but whatever it can’t be too hard right. He puts $20 on my birthday. I absolutely kid you not - It HIT! It paid 35 to 1 or something like that. Hubs went to cash in the chips - I don’t recall the payout but you can do the math there. Uncle Buddy and I hit the bar outside the D. This is when drunken craziness goes in overload. Uncle Buddy meets Jodie - a witch with a capital B bartender whom he loved her attitude. He buys me and him these giant plastic drinks you here about. His is a naked lady with no head. Jodie fills his up over the knees with Patron and frozen margarita. Mine was filled with quite a bit with some Patron [she grabbed the wrong bottle and then 151 then frozen hurricane] I will tell you right now that we did not need these drinks.

We do a bit more wandering. I go in a shop and buy some souvenirs for home they were having a pretty good end of summer sale. I come back out and for some reason Uncle Buddy has a plastic baseball around his neck and his large drink. We find a DJ playing some tunes as things downtown have just about wound down for the evening. Uncle Buddy decides since they are playing Wham that dancing is in order. He finds a woman to dance with and off he goes. I did get the video of all this for home. He is still quite the dancer even when he can barely walk. I pop in a few more casinos where I had coupons for goodies. Came out and Uncle Buddy is now dancing with some European guys wife. Hubs is keeping an eye on things. I let the guy know in a drunken slur that Uncle Buddy is harmless.

We make our way back to Binions. We find the spray paint artist and buy two paintings - one for Hubs and one for his dad. We get to Binions to find that the player’s club desk closed at midnight. WTH? So we couldn’t pick up our photos [and forgot to come back the next day] we also couldn’t get our parking validated. We tried at the cashier’s desk but she said that we need to go to the floor and find someone. At this point we should have just paid the $10 parking as Hubs was a little done. But we decided we would play and wait till we found the parking validation lady. Well Uncle Buddy won another chunk of cash and I won a little and we got validated. We also thought we might finish up drinks as I’m sure open container laws still apply in Vegas. Oh no photos except phones as the camera got left in the car again J

As we are getting out of the garage at about 1:30 am I ask Hubs for one more thing. If we could drive the strip home. He obliged and off we went. So cool to see all the lights and people that wander at that time of night. Uncle Buddy and I were still quite drunk so there was some antics but nothing to get us pulled over. We got down to the sign and only one other car was there - go figure at 2am. We decided this was a good time for photos. I’m not sure how well these came out. But Uncle Buddy gave us one more laugh - he wanted to climb the sign. He quickly figured this was an error and I’m fairly sure his man parts were not happy with him the next day. Everyone there had a pretty good laugh though. Back to our hotel - Uncle Buddy headed to bed. Hubs and I were a bit hungry. We saw that Fuddruckers was open and thought we could get a snack. Well low and behold they had the full menu available. He grabbed chili dogs and cheese fries to go and headed up to our room. Food was same quality as home - yummy and same price no Vegas upcharge wow!

Tuesday August 26th - Up and at em not so early today about 11pm. We got breakfast/lunch at the The Orleans buffet. I was so so disappointed. I have never gotten a bad or even so so meal at a Boyd Property. The food was awful and borderline inedible. The service was bad - get you own drinks would have been better here. I plan on actually writing Boyd Corp on this one.

We headed off to Mandalay Bay to see the shark reef exhibit. We found the M life desks and cashed in our MyVegas vouchers and she gave us directions and said it was about a 10 minute walk??? Whoa! While we did this Uncle Buddy played and won again. Every part of Mandalay Bay is just gorgeous. We made the trek to the exhibit it is a long walk only issue is you have to go through the convention area and just our luck they were switching over sessions after lunch or something. We felt swarmed by the crowd. Got our tickets at the box office no issue. The reef is really quite neat and several species to see - we love aquariums. I am glad it was free because it was the smallest aquarium we have been in. I did buy some goodies for the grandkids as they love shark things. I also got our blue screen pictures they took. The clerk there was so nice and gave me a freebie frame that is really quite pretty.

Next we hit the Shelby Shop/Museum - glad we did this next as we got there just after the last tour started. The normal tour is about 45 minutes tops. However they have an older gentleman who was a friend of Carroll Shelby’s and his tour lasts a bit longer - Hubs was engrossed in all of it. I went and took photos then shopped in the store. Uncle Buddy did half the tour then found a bench and took a nap. Hubs is an auto tech with a specialty in Fords so this was high on his list. He signed the shop wall twice.

I think that a few Texans preceded you, but some of the damage has yet to be repaired... [LOL]

Have a great and enjoyable trip, and travel safely,

After this they wanted to go to the Atomic Testing Museum - I was out on this. I told them to give me the cliff notes. I had them drop me off at Ellis Island down the street. I had ACG coupons and this seemed up my alley. I won about $60 in free play off my coupon and new player sign up. Also had a match play which I one. I played off my freeplay for a bit and came out not losing any of my $$$ but didn’t win any extra either. I played blackjack for a bit - $5 and 3:2 - won about $300 I think then table went cold. Hubs and Uncle Buddy had showed back up. They got their freeplay and we played another hour. The our brother in law Bill who works in Vegas during the week but lives in Texas - long commute - called that he was done working for the day.

We met him at McMullen’s Irish Pub right across the side road to The Orleans. The beer and food were fabulous. The Irish nachos may seem very strange but order this they are awesome. You can get ¼ or ½ or full. For four of us ½ was too much. Hubs and I had Sheppard’s pie, Uncle Buddy had a sandwich and Bill had fish/chips. All delicious. The beers all good and since we were close to the hotel Hubs joined in the beers to a point. After we ate Uncle Buddy was pooped out so he walked over to the hotel. We stayed for trivia night with Bill that was tons of fun with lots of locals. We parted ways from the pub with Bill about 10:30pm. We had plans of seeing the strip at night at that point - ride the roller coaster, Eiffel Tower, fountains etc. but we were a bit tired and drunk. We could have cabbed it but honestly the ones we saw were scary. We didn’t want to chance driving and have the added attraction of Clark county so we just stayed at the casino at the hotel. Hubs and I parted ways to explore on our own. I really enjoyed the new Batman game and a few others but just wasn’t feeling it so called it a night. Wandered the gift shop for snacks and more goodies. Went up to our room I couldn’t find my room key but security knew me by this point - I sat in the chair by the elevator looking for my key through all my crap and finally found it. Went in and no hubs so just went to bed.

Wednesday August 27th - up and checked out forgot I could do this on the tv. Uncle Buddy had already been up playing a bit. This ends the Vegas adventure but I will add a bit more because I know a some people take daytrips on here. We headed to old town in Boulder City - ate breakfast at the Coffee Cup - wow great food and service. Highly recommended. We then headed to the Hoover Dam - we just looked around a bit no tour but did do the visitor center. We did the $10 parking as the free Arizona side parking would have been quite a hike. Lots of pictures and a bit more shopping goodies.

We then headed to Williams our Grand Canyon stop for the next two days. Two things I would highly suggest not doing a one day drive to the Grand Canyon NP and back - it is 5 hours or so each way and just a tiring drive - not much to see. Also staying in Williams works just fine. Our hotel was a complete surprise and the nicest hotel we have stayed in for a while. Beautifully decorated and clean and comfy and Jacuzzi tub. Get this it was technically a Rodeway Inn. Yes the lower end of the Choice Hotels chain. I will be sending their corporate office a kudos email. After a very nice dinner - there are some really good restaurants in town - we had Italian and great wine. Just me not the boys.

We then headed to GCNP for the sunset. Wow - we had a tip to got to Yavapai Point for the best sunset views. We got there just in time as we got the last spot in the parking area. Great views this is the spot for sunset.

Funny thing happened at breakfast - a Japanese lady in the lobby looks at hubs and says oh redneck - then snaps a picture of him on her ipad. No joke - too funny. Next we went to Bearizona - awesome. Then to Tusyan to the National G visitor center. We decided on the 3 hour Pink Jeep Tour. Very good decision. No worries about driving or spotting wildlife in the road. We ended up with a private tour as the no one else was booked at that time. I cannot recommend this enough. Our guide took us places where most people don’t go. I did almost fall in the canyon and I promptly blamed Hubs for pushing me. I landed on my butt about 6 inches from the rim. He didn’t but it was funny to me. Not so much to Hubs or Uncle Buddy or the tour guide. From then out when we got close to the edge one them wanted to hold on to me - go figure. We did do the obligatory pretend to fall over the edge pictures and Uncle Buddy knocked off a bucket list item. He relieved himself into the canyon. LOL

Final Thoughts - Sorry this was so long - I have issues editing myself. Can you imagine if I stayed in Vegas longer? The full road trip will be over on the road trip forum and there is many more fun things that happened. We didn’t see a lot of the attractions most folks do but we sure had fun. Hubs didn’t have any melt downs and handled the street people quite well with just some glaring looks. He didn’t valet my Patti car not once. We are all planning on a return trip but flying.

The Orleans Hotel worked out perfect for all of us. I really can’t imagine what would have happened had Uncle Buddy and I had more places to wander around. The hotel is nice, parking seemed safe and staff very friendly. Only issues were the buffet and I really didn’t care for the vibe of the casino.

The Big Bus Tour also worked for us as we got a good overall looksey of the city without having to drive everywhere. We didn’t use the hop on /off option but it seemed to work for other folks fine.

We were way more comfortable downtown than anywhere else.
