First Trip Questions/Opinions Please

Hello all, I have been a loyal watcher of this forum for a couple of months since we decided to go to Vegas for your yearly trip. Here are a few details of our trip, please let me know your thoughts.

Arriving: Monday, June 27

Departing: Friday, July 1

Hotel: Originally thought Flamingo (price, location, pool....) but am now thinking Caesar's Palace. Staying in standard rooms at either. Price difference is about $80/pp to move from Flamingo to Caesar's.

Is the price worth switching hotels (have not made reservations yet)?

Anyone use Travelocity? Opinions/Problems? BTW use promo code MARCHLAS if you book in March and looks like you can save $75...:-)

Since we are using Travelocity do we have any chance of the $20 trick working for us at the checkin (probably will use airport checkin)?

OK here is the point blank question. My wife and I are above average size. Basically we both fit snugly in the plane seat. I have heard that some airlines judge your size and tell you that you must purchase an additional ticket. Any truth to this? experiences? Airline may end up being American, Frontier, or Southwest(probably American).

Caesar's appears to have a pretty cool club called PURE, any opinions one way or the other? would we get VIP access since we would be staying there?

Thanks all for your help, much appreciated. As you can see we are a few months off but rates seem pretty cheap right now and we are probably going to book within the next week or so.

Best regards, Shane and Jennifer (Rock Chalk....Jayhawks!!!!)

Boy, if Southwest harrassed you, I'd be very surprised. They are efficient, but they are pretty laid back. My favorite...

I'll address the size issue first. Only airline I have heard of that charges for 2 seats is Southwest, and it is at the discretion of the gate attendants. My wife and I are both plus sized, she flew with SWA from CA all the time before moving here and was never charged for 2 seats. We both fit within the armrsets, but put them up for that extra inch of room.

If you want to have the best shot at getting an upgrade, do not book through Travelocity, or any other service. They buy a block of rooms and that is where you most likely will be staying. To have the best chance at an upgrade book directly through your chosen hotel. Upgrades are given when available and on a first ask, first get basis. No need to try the $20 trick, unless you are turned down when you are polite and ask. Say something like "Ok, I know you can't give an upgrade for Mr (Your name) what can you do for Mr Jackson?"

Staying midweek M-F gives you a decent chance at getting one of these prized upgrades. I have stayed at the Flamingo several times over the past 4 years. Nice hotel, great location and I like the pool. You can stand under the waterfalls and get a great massage on your neck, shoulders and back.

I have never stayed at Caesar's, I know the casino and Forum shop are nice, for a $20-30 increase in price per night, I think Caesar's would be a bargain over the Flamingo.

I would not change from Flamingo to Caesers. I like the Flaminngo better. You get the same location and rooms are decent. I like gambling more at the Flamingo also. Flamingos pool is good, food is average. You are only sleeping here. Save your money for things other than the stay at Caesers. If you make your reservations throught Travelocity or another agent, you will not get an upgrade. Please be sure to check the hotels website direct. Generally you get a better deal booking directly with hotel. Unless you are really big i wouldnt think you would have to purchase an extra seat. Ive had plenty of bigger people next to me and im no small guy (6'2" and 245). Im just glad that im not the person that gets stuck next to you on the plane.

This size issue really chaps me. I will tell you the Southwest has lost money from me and i am sure others over this policy. I purposely book other airlines because of their policies. I am a plus sized person adn so is my fiance. sure we can diet, but we are not going to get significanlt smaller than God made us. I am sure the marketing genueses decided to make airline seats the size they are so that they could get more butts on the airline rather than actually considering the average size of a normal human beign (SP). SW Airline has a statement on their website trying to justify this discrimination and I am surprized that it has not cause some legal problems thus far. I will only fly Southwest in an emergency and maybe not even at that.

The show called 'Airlines' on the A&E network follows the passenges and workers at SW in different cities and one show featured a plus size women being denied bording because she refused to pay for an extra seat. It was such a sad situation to watch because she had flown in on SW with no problems! It's hard to say this is not discrimination when one agent considers you too large for one seat but another agent doesn't give it a second thought. I really does raise one's anxiety level about traveling on SW.

Those seats keep getting smaller and smaller. Or is it me......:(

Devo,

Sounds to me like you're not getting smaller. But the seats definitely are.

Yes, that is the problem with SWA policy, there is no policy. At least no guidelines, it is up to the discretion of the gate attendant. If they were to say anyone wieghing over 300# had to pay for 2 seats, I'd be ok with that, but what if someone was 300# and 7' tall, they would not be as wide as someone that was 5'1" and weighed 210#. I seriously doubt that the woman on that show gained that much weight while awaiting her next flight. Although if she was leaving Vegas it's possible the buffets did that to her. ;-)

There are MANY reasons I do not fly Southwest, and the policy of requiring people to pay for two seats is at the top of the list (and thats not even an issue for me!). As far as I know, American does not have that policy.

I pretty much agree with most of you. I myself don't have a problem fitting into the seats provided, and understand that the number of seats on an airplane are directly related to the price of the ticket. If they made all seats 1-1/2 times their current size, then tix go up 1-1/2 times their current price.

What I don't understand, is why they don't have a couple of rows of plus size seats? Why is it so hard for airlines to be able to cater to everyone's needs? Doing this would maybe eliminate....what....about 4-8 seats? The price of those seat tacked onto the other 200 in the plane would be minor, if not insignificant. Heck, the people sitting in those seats might not have a problem paying the extra $50 themselves.

Why can't they get this right????? I really think the feds need to set regulations and make something along these lines mandatory for all commercial airplanes.

I only weigh 150 pounds...not super heavy, but not super skinny...but even I have a hard time in those seats! They are just SO narrow! What if my problem is that most of MY weight lies at my hips...having babies DOES change your structure! Just doesn't make sense that they aren't more accomadating. I love to watch the show Airline...it is interesting to see the behind the scenes look at how the airport/flights really work...unfortunately, it has really turned me off to flying SW.

Personally, I'd be happy if more folks like yourselves decided they hated Southwest and never flew with them again. More seats available for those of us that don't fly on any other airline but Southwest. Please get a boycott or something going, thank you...
