I took a bus tour which obviously takes longer than driving yourself. I think it's probably about an hour or so if you drive. Absolutely worth the trip, it is an amazing monument to the ambition of mankind and there's a lot of great 30s style architecture and sculpture.

Red Rock Canyon is only about 20 miles from the strip. You can do it in the morning and have the rest of the day for anything else.Go to the south end of the stip to Blue Diamond and turn right. You will see more of the desert and get to RR fast.

Another place is Valley of Fire which is north on #15 about 60 miles away but on a highway that allows 75mph.

Hoover Dam / Lake Mead / Valley of Fire State Park makes a nice loop for a day trip. Lots of info. on this forum -search for Hoover dam and for VOF or Valley of Fire.

A good day trip itinerary would be drive down to Boulder Dam. It takes about an hour to drive it from the strip. Time spent at the dam can be as little as 30-minutes up to a few hours if you take a tour. Most likely you will only be there an hours as there is not much to see and even less to actually do.

From the dam head to Red Rock Canyon, the scenery is nice, an dif you are into rock climbing it is heaven. The snakes, scorpions, and black widows will enjoy a good meal and appreciate your donations. LOL. Seriously it is a decent place for pictures. Time hter depends on how many stops you make. You can drive through it in 20-minutes or spend a day there rock climbing.

On the way back stop off at Rosemary’s restaurant. It will be the best meal you eat while in Vegas, and less expensive than any upscale strip joint..

IMHO you cannot fit Valley of Fire in a day trip with Boulder Dam and Red Rock Canyon unless you are a drive by shooter. It is just to far away and VOF is quite a bit more to see than the other two and really requires at least a day to see to be appreciated.

Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Valley of Fire

best day trip I've had in a long while - awesome scenery and VoF (imho) is far superior to Red Rock Canyom, - much more dramatic
