What has happened to vegas?

We try and get to Vegas every year. This year we stayed at the Luxor and noticed a huge difference. People were not happy. Everywhere you went people were complaining of the same thing. No one was winning and the food was very expensive. Even the penny and nickel machines weren't paying. And we had a very difficult time finding quarter machines. I love Vegas but if things don't start changing then we are going to find somewhere else to lose our money.

I can't imagine that no one in the whole city wasn't winning. We've all had winning trips and losing trips.

I don't find the food in Las Vegas expensive at all. It's the same price it is here in Boston. There are high end places and more affordable places all over Las Vegas.

I think people just like having something to complain about.

Vegas is changing.

Major corporations own the casinos, not gangstas.

Stock holder, bottom line income is the primary focus, not your enjoyment.

Competition has become very tight for your money.

Select your casino carefully.

The only thing I would add to this is I felt the people were kinda rude when I was there last week. I am guessing the whole 'opening a door for a lady' thing just doesnt happen in LV as I never saw it - people ahead of you would just close the door and not even look your way...........i would never do that! Also - servers in restaurants were not very polite and sometimes downright rude. Maybe I am biassed though towards the south east where manners are so prevalent?!

Atlantic city's food is more expensive than Vegas is. We went to A/C last september and i couldn't believe how much more expensive it is than Vegas.

Vegas is changing - this time around, I noticed the much higher room rates, buffet prices, etc. But....costs are rising as well so I guess hotel costs have to increase as well. Can't say I saw unhappy people though.

I still love it and will go whenever I can!! :-)

Seems like last time I was in Vegas everyone except me was winning on the slots.

It is harder to find reasonably priced food and lodging, but I enjoy planning and research, so as a lot of TA posters know there are still deals in Vegas if you look hard enough.

As for rudeness, I chalk it up to people being busy, distracted and just not paying attention.

Nick, you mentioned the great service you are used to in Florida. On my recent trip to Tampa I had one of my worst ever food service experiences. Perhaps the waitress who served me at Frenchy's Saltwater Cafe on Clearwater Beach should move to Vegas.

The couple next to me ordered a pitcher of Bud. After the waitress brought it they were commenting to each other "this sure doesn't taste like Bud". They asked the waitress if it was Bud and she said, "if that's what you ordered, then that's what it is". Great answer and the service went downhill from there. I think bad service is everywhere, especially in tourist areas where they don't expect repeat business.

I had a really hard time booking my vegas trip for April .Prices at same hotel went up over twice as much, can't afford it. Staying at a low quality place and it's still costing me more - May be my last trip even though I love it-

I've noticed there is a definite trend in Vegas to go more upscale and affluent. The older, more affordable places are being imploded in favor of huge mega-resorts that will be out of reach for the average Joe like me. Even comps will be harder to come by as the casinos demand a higher and higher level of play. In order to pay for these mega-resorts, the owners have no choice but to charge premiums for food & lodging and make the gaming tight. They must think there's a market for this; only time will tell if they're right. So far, since the original Flamingo was built, the gamble has definitely paid off. Yes, there are off-Strip joints that are still affordable, but it is only a matter of time before people start booking up the Orleans and South Point and demand exceeds supply. Look out, Downtown, because I think it's next to get an expensive makeover.

The thing that irked me the most on my last trip to Vegas was all the special services available for diamond/platinum club card holders. Stayed at Paris and all the Harrahs high roller card people were living the high life. Went to Bally's buffet, didn't wait too long but when we got to the front of the line a diamond cardholder walked up and entered special line and was seated first. Just find it a bit irritating when you pay the money to stay at a nice hotel and still get treated as a second class citizen.

Don't have the money to spend to attain diamond status so I will just have to grumble to myself.

C'est la vie.
