Hotel Room availability with no reservation

We are travelling through southern California and Nevada in Sept. '12

How easy is it to get a hotel room without a booking. i.e. walk -up rates?

Generally speaking it's not difficult, but I would check ahead through the www.reno.com calendar for your specific dates: there are some big events in the late summer/early fall that sell out the hotels in advance.

There are three large events during September that bring in a lot of travelers to Reno Tahoe; The Great Reno Balloon Races (Sep. 7-9), National Championship Air Races (Sep. 12-16), and Street Vibrations (Sep. 19-23). To guarantee you have a room for your trip during these dates, it would be best to make reservations in advance.

It really depends on when in Sept you arrive given the 3 events listed above, as they are pretty popular in Reno and the hotels tend to fill up. In addition, the prices will be very expensive (even more so for a walk in) at almost all the major casino hotels.

If budget hotels don't bother you, that may be your best bet then say Peppermill, El Dorado, or The Nugget

You will probably have no trouble finding a room. Even on big event weekends you will find sold out way ahead, but what happens is people cancel at the last minute thus creating vacancy.

Many times I make a last minute decision to head to Reno. What I have found is when I walk up and ask if they have rooms they will quote me a high rate- higher than website on line prices. I usually have free room coupons in hand, so it is not a factor for me.

Based on my expierence walk up rates seem to be higher over a booked rate.

I would not try it on the weekends. They would not allow us to check in on Saturday and check out on Monday, and we were trying to get a reservation. They want people to reserve Friday and Saturday together. That was Silver

Legacy and El Dorado. This is why we are staying at Circus Circus this time. They did not have such a rule. We won't be arriving until Saturday, so checking in on Friday was not an option for us.

I am not sure how it is on weekends.
