El Dorado or Silver Legacy?

The setting: Wife and I will be celebrating a milestone anniversary. 4 nights stay.

Looking for something other than our annual trip to Vegas.

Wish look to stay in a suite with the spa-tub in it.

Wish to have a nice pool for her to lounge at.

Wish for it to have a poker room for me to "lounge at" while she is at the pool. :)

Wish for it to have great restaurants & shopping nearby.

I've priced both and they are similar. Just looking to get some opinions.

thanks for your time

Both places are more or less equal IMO, but the pool at the Silver Legacy will be more enjoyable for your wife. I'd lean towards it. Location, food etc.. are pretty much like one hotel.

Have you ruled out other properties? The Peppermill is superior (my opinion) in all the categories listed except for maybe shopping although there is a huge mall just south of the Peppermill.

Both connected by a walkway. Pool at Eldo is not one I'd spend much time visiting and the SL pool is often very busy and filled with kids. I usually stay at SL and am happy with my visits.

Suggestion? Head to Peppermill south of downtown. Great pool, tons of lounges, good food, nice (and plentiful) spa rooms. New poker room and a best sports book in town IMHO.

We have stayed at the spa suite in both the El Dorado and Silver Legacy. El Dorado spa suites can vary - we had one once with wonderful windows looking out at the Sierra Mountains, nice spa. We've had another and it was not so good.

We have seen better consistency at the Silver Legacy. The spa room bathroom is huge.....very nice.

The spa is nice; the rooms were large.

As such, I'd probably go with the Silver Legacy. For pools, between the 2 Silver Legacy. I'd spring for a cabana rental for 1/2 or full day just so it adds to the celebration fun.

For dinner, Roxys is good at El Dorado. At Silver Legacy, Sterlings is their top one. The best buffet of the two is El Dorado (but it does not matter which hotel you stay at as you can easily walk to it.). Best entertainment is at the Silver Legacy - check to see what the top entertainer when you are there. The show at the El Dorado is a standing show for several months, but usually well done.

The Peppermill casino decor is about 3 decades old - but the swimming pool is the best in the area.

Problem with the Peppermill is that you are stuck there......and in general the buffet is awful, the cafe is aged; although there are some nicer higher end restaurants and bars.

I'd go with Silver Legacy - just was there last week again. The staff there was stellar.

ec- you, like me, rank a good poker room as a necessity. Please be advised that as the ElDo and SL are sister properties, they are linked by a bridge, have cross-charging back to your room from either property, and most amenities are available to guests of both hotels. As others have correctly stated, the spa rooms at SL are a bit better, and the pool is superior. Silver Legacy has no true poker room, just a few poker-tec tables that never get used.

Still, I'd agree that SL is your best lodging choice, and then its no more than a >5 minute walk to the ElDorado poker room. They have a great, low-stress, low buy-in 10am tournament that is fun to play. Sign up @ 900am.

A different perspective on the Peppermill:

Neon and mirrors in a lot of areas, which might bring on the "decades old" label. But I've always found it comfortable. And there are HD TVs everywhere showing panoramic, beautiful videos, from all over the world. Totally unique. Well-managed casino/hotel. Atlantis is an easy 20 minute walk away, and worth visiting.

Coffee shop was recently re-done. Buffet is not the best in town, but far from terrible. Tuscany rooms are the best in town. Their website has a great tab for "walking through" the rooms and most of the casino.

All this said, I prefer the Pepp, overall, but Eldorado over the SL, and I've been coming to Reno for more than 20 years.
