Good 'family' hotel in Reno

Hey everyone. Our family (mom, dad, two boys aged 12 and 15) are passing through Reno on our epic summer road trip. I'm seeing a lot of really great prices for hotels in Reno, but having never been there I have no idea what to pick. It won't be a long stay - just one night, but we'd like a place where we can get a decent meal that won't break the bank, mom and dad might like to play a little blackjack at the cheap tables...and I mean cheap, and the kids would surely enjoy a nice pool.

We'd like all that and free parking, wifi, no extra fees, etc. Asking too much? I've seen Atlantis Casino Resort, The Grand Sierra, Sands, John Ascuagas Nugget, Silver Legacy, Harrah's and a bunch of others for great prices. Almost too many choices? Who has some great advice. Thanks so much.

Free parking is easy to come by in Reno - they only charge sometimes for parking when a special event is going on like the Reno Aces game ($5 to $10).

I would suggest the Peppermill to stay at. It has a very nice pool area for the family - all the families I know head to the Peppermill due to the pool. Atlantis is also popular in case Peppermill is full. It has two pools - one inside and one outside and a comfortable patio area.

I have stayed at all the hotels you mention except for the Sands. I have gone there but its an older hotel and small pool.).

Grand Sierra is more party scene - so even though the pool area is nice not so nice for family stands.

Silver Legacy is closer to Circus Circus - Circus Circus is the arcade area where kids like to go and has some limited circus acts. So if arcade is important good choice. Silver Legacy - El Dorado - Circus Circus are all connected together. The buffet at the El Dorado is very good; the other good buffet in Reno is at the Atlantis.

I personally did not care for the Peppermill buffet, but their coffee shop area was fine and ok prices.

So if you want a place with pool, good casino, and good buffet I would go with Atlantis.

If you want a stellar pool, go with Peppermill. The casino area will work for your mom and dad (note - its a little older style casino but your mom and dad will like it.).

If arcade is most important, Silver Legacy - but not as good of pool as Peppermill or Atlantis. Just note it can get more party rowdy here - so if that is a concern go with Peppermill or Atlantis.

Hope that helps some - going up next week for Hot August Nights (old cars and great bands).

All of this is my humble opinion -but since we go frequently its what I have obesrved and have heard from others.

have a good one night in town (by the way if your mom and dad are interested in the show the small show room in El Dorado Casino usually puts on a good show that they might enjoy.)

The Peppermill has a very nice pool. They have a large arcade for the kids too. They have free wi-fi and you can find $5 BJ tables. However, they do charge one of those resort fees as do most other places in town.

The GSR has many activities for kids in that age group. Those are located far away from the casino and many choices for dining. http://grandsierraresort.com/activities The GSR is a very large complex, but the pool is nicer at the Peppermill.

There are some $3 BJ tables downtown.

The Sands is very cheap, but not in such a good area of Reno. Atlantis is a very nice place and could work for you.

If a pool is a big concern and you can get a good rate go with the Peppermill (my opinion)

We only visited the Grand Sierra, played crazy golf at the entrance but was very impressed, if we came back with family would certainly stay there. We stayed at the Atlantis which was lovely and John Asguagas Nugget. The Nugget had a very large kids arcade and the pool looked fine, plenty of children in there but we didn't care much for the accommodation (was the renovated tower) and I spent two nights on the phone to security regarding the terrible noise we were experiencing on the floor. If your stay is only one night I don't think you need be overly concerned, all the properties have positives and negatives just work out which is the most important to you.

Thanks everyone. I had booked the Nugget, but canceled and booked the Grand Sierra. The hotel looks nice and was a great price. It is only one night, but planning our annual road trip is practically a hobby for me.
