21st birthday in Reno

looking for suggestions on taking my 21 year old son and his girlfriend to Reno for a night. what's a good place to stay? gamble? bar or lounge with a live band, maybe dancing? ...dinner suggestions?

anything outside the casinos that we shouldn't miss?

thanks for any advice.

If his girlfriend is not 21, that's a problem. For just a night, I'd go with the Eldorado, because it has the best restaurants. E's Brews Brothers is a good venue for music and dancing, depending on the day of the week, which is true for other venues, as well. With only a day, that rules out Lake Tahoe or Virginia City. The car museum by the river is pretty nice. Reno Aces baseball game is also fun, and a short walk. May also have a live band afterwards, in the same complex.

You can also see what's going on the day you are there by going to sites like visitrenotahoe.com and newsreview.com/reno.

Let me toss a not-quite time-honored ritual for a 21-year-old: Get them out for a Bloody Mary on

Saturday or Sunday. Here is a set of the best in town: ediblerenotahoe.com/editorial/72-winter-2013…

I like Chapel Tavern, Noble Pie as their Mary concoctions are both meal/drink. If you do stay at the Eldorado per WolfDog's suggestion and don't want to leave the property, Drinx in the Silver Legacy has a fix-your-own Bloody Mary Bar.

Well, if you survive Sat night ..... do try the Sunday Brunch at Sterling's in the Silver Legacy. $35 per person gets you all you can eat lavish fancy buffet, with crab legs, lamb chops, breakfast stuffs, alcoholic desserts and all you can drink champagne ... not the cheap stuff either, poured by servers in penguin suits ... formal nice! so worth it!

I prefer the Eldorado's buffet, even on Sunday. But I admit I don't know the SL's brunch very well.

I have to second KV that the Sterling Brunch IS a treat and something special for a birthday. Oh and that Drinxx Bloody Mary bar? Right across the from Sterlings! BAM!

PS to WolfDog: We do the Eldo buffet for the Friday seafood. One of our "go-to" places.

Also, I've heard that Bubinga in Eldo is a good place for dancing if you wish to stay on property and Aura is always grooving' at the Silver Legacy (on the same property).
