Oxfordman -- Would also vote in favor of the Exit 63-to-Rt-302 alternative if you're coming via Portland instead of just heading north through New Hampshire from Portsmouth. Totally eliminates the commercial area(s) of Portland; much easier driving; and much easier route to follow for someone not familiar with the area.... And, as already noted, some nice scenery once you get onto 302.

Steve L -- to expand just a bit on wpsaukee's response re: bus service from North Conway to Portland. Bus service in Maine and New Hampshire is limited to a few major corridors in both states -- with considerable distances between towns or cities of any size and low population densities, bus service just isn't economically feasible to many places in both states. Things are further complicated by the fact that the mountain ranges of New England generally run north-south, making east-west travel via any means challenging at times.

Concord Bus Lines operates the inter-city service serving North Conway, connecting it with numerous other locations in New Hampshire as well as providing service to and from Boston.

Concord also provides service from Boston to numerous locations in Maine, mostly in the southern and coastal parts of the state, including Portland.

So, you can actually travel from North Conway to Portland by bus, but only by taking the North Conway bus to Boston and connecting there with the northbound bus to Portland.

Buses leave North Conway twice a day -- about 8:00AM and about 2:00PM if memory serves -- arriving in Boston about four hours later. Buses leave Boston for Portland almost hourly from early morning to late in the evening -- reaching Portland in about two hours. So, to get from North Conway to Portland via bus, you're looking at a minimum of six hours of on-the-bus time, plus any time between buses in Boston -- compared to driving between the two via US Rt 302, which most folks do in an hour-and-a-half to two hours depending on weather and traffic.
