beaches?

We are going to be staying at the Embassy Suites in the Meadowlands from June 13 to June 15. I was wondering if there are any decent beaches that we could drive to. We will have a rental car.

Thanks.

You will need to drive about an hour south to Monmouth County; the northern-most beach worth visiting is Sandy Hook (Gateway Nat'l Park). I would recommend you go a little further to exit 109 on the Garden State Parkway and find Donavan's Reef in Sea Bright. It's a fun beach with a bar, food, and live music on weekends. Brace yourselves to deal with heavy traffic while heading south on Friday and Saturday; leave early to come down. Also, there's a fee to access most beaches and parking.

Have fun,

Heard about that beach. Is it true that it is a nudist beach? I have two teenage sons coming along so I don't want any surprises!

Thanks for your info.

There actually is a nude beach at Sandy Hook, but there are several miles of beachfront so it's quite easy to avoid. It's way, way down near the end; so if you're driving in you won't need to worry about coming even close to it. There is also a bar/restaurant called the Seagull's Nest where you can grab a bite before heading home. By tradition, they sing God Bless America at sunset. Check it out if you go.

No problem; I live at the Jersey Shore so feel free to PM me if you want any more info. Are you going to the Meadowlands for a show?

Another popular one is Point Pleasant. It is around an hour's drive from your hotel, I believe exit 98 on the Garden State Parkway. It has a boardwalk, games/rides, and would also be a good bet.

Another option for travel to the beach (if you don't need the rental car) is to take the NJ transit train there. I don't know if your hotel provides a free shuttle to the Secaucus NJ Transit station, but if they do then it would be doable:

Point Pleasant is nice for kids. Nice beach as well.

Take a look at New Jersey Monthly - which is a magazine dedicated to NJ activities. They have a guide for shore locations.

Thought I'd write a quick update on this. I was at Point Pleasant Beach this weekend. The traffic once you get off the Parkway was insane - took me almost an extra hour! Once I got into Point Pleasant, finding parking was a nightmare. Private lots were charging about $30-$40 to park. If you were going to look for parking in a municipal lot, you were fighting with hundreds of others looking for the same thing. Totally not worth it.. I wound up leaving and driving a few miles up the road to Bradley Beach - no fancy boardwalk but it was a lot less crowded and there was plenty of free parking.
