Sell New Jersey To Us

This year will be our 6th annual holiday on the bounce to NY\NJ, most of which has been spent in the Manhattan bubble, with infrequent visits to Shea\Citi Field, SI, Brooklyn - you get the picture..

Anyway, this year we're keen on spreading our wings somewhat, and spending more time in Jersey - all we know about the state is Jersey Gardens and our regular visits to see the Football Giants.

What other shopping, cultural pursuits, etc would you recommend?

Any ideas (constructive) appreciated.

I'd add the Thomas Edison National HIstoric site in West Orange, NJ

http://www.nps.gov/edis/index.htm

I was just there for father's day (the one day when I get to pick where we go as a family! Last year I picked the Sterline Zinc Mine Museum which I also heartily recommend http://sterlinghillminingmuseum.org/) and it's wonderful -- at least, it is if you're interested in science and industry. This was the location of Edison's "idea factory" where he lived and worked from the 1880s to his death in the 1930s. The entire facility is as it was at them time of his death and is open to the public including his chemistry lab (with stern warnings about no touching allowed since the place is still full 80 year old jars of chemicals), his light and heavy machine shops (he liked to brag that his shop could build anything from a ladies watch to a locomotive), his personal llibrary & office, his home, etc. It's a great site, worthy of America's greatest inventor

On another topic, you may also wish to peruse this article, from yesterday's NY Times, about some great gardens in the Garden State nytimes.com/2010/06/25/garden/25garden.html… (though I hesitate telling an Englishman to go see an American garden!)

And, if you'ed like to partake of some local high fat, low health, but very delicious junk food, I'd suggest Jimmy Buff's at 60 Washington St. in West Orange, about 5 min away. Here's the web site http://www.jimmybuff.com/ -- but rest assured, the web site makes the West Orange location look much fancier than it really is! It's a dive, a greasy spoon, -- but it's wonderful. Seating on premises. Here are some reviews, none of which would I argue with www.yelp.com/biz/jimmy-buffs-west-orange-2

And if I may be permitted, I'd also recomend a trip to Philadelphia which is really charming, walkable and historic. One of the few American cities with plenty of 18th century building still standing

need to narrow down the time of year and what you're interested in? kids?

the nice thing about nj is we're w/in an hr of everything ... fr. the beach to the mountains to the city .. you choose!

kids - JC science ctr

views of manhatten/ hudson - walk hoboken only a short PATH ride away, or along the palisades, walk or bring bikes to liberty state park

shopping- better in nj, no sales tax on clothing. high end - short hills mall

beaches - too much to choose fr: AC outlets, casinos and great restaurants, ocean city- very fam oriented, quaint cape may, point pleasant - fun boardwalk.

cultural - NJPAC, shakespeare theatre - small but always quality performances, walk around princeton.

... just to name a few ideas.

Head to Lambertville, NJ. It is in one of the most beautiful areas of NJ, right on the Delaware River. Lambertville has lots of cute shops, great restaurants, walking/biking paths along the canal, great scenery, plus you can walk across the bridge to New Hope, which is just as nice. There are several cute towns (and wineries) to the north of Lambertville, within a 1/2 hour drive. Lambertville would be about one and a half hours from NYC.

Head down to Point Pleasant, Bay Head, or Lavallette. All three are on the ocean. All three are very nice, with great beaches and nice shops and restaurants. Point Pleasant has a boardwalk, although it doesn't have any rides. But it does have food stands and I believe it has games. Lavallette has a boardwalk, but there is nothing on it. All three are great places to go in the summer.

My favorite area of NJ is the Highlands area in the Northwestern part of the state. For those people whose impression of NJ is the airport or just malls, this will change your mind. It has some of the most beautiful parks in the state.
