Advice please

We land at Newark Liberty Arpt on 16th March 2014 at 22.30 we don't fly on to the Uk until 19.15 17th March 2014. Advice please. What to do for the day that we have waiting for our flight. Our luggage will not be with us as it goes straight through so only hand luggage to contend with. Is there a specific tour that we could do to see some sights? Would it be best to stay at a hotel further away from the airport so we are closer to the sights the following day which will be a Monday, will traffic be a concern getting back to the airport for our flight?

I would suggest staying in NYC you can take a bus right to times square on Sunday and then back to Newark on Monday. Others here can tell you the best place to stay, but that will give you the most options. If you want to see NJ sites aerules will post some nj options for you

What kinds of sights might you want to see, near the airport in New Jersey or across the river in New York? Maybe something like the business at this link is of interest?

There is plenty to do in New Jersey as well. Here are a few links. The Newark Meusem is a decent option.

I too would double check on that luggage.

But assuming it is, then you have a tough decision. Realistically, if you get a room in NYC you won't get there until what, 1:00 AM? Would you want to go out then? And the next day you need to get to the airport at least 2-3 hours ahead and since it's a weekday I'd want to give it an hour to get there (actual travel time will be less but depending on where your hotel is you may waste some time getting out of the city). So is it worth it to you to get an expensive room in the city and pay for travel to/fro for just a few hours?

If it were me, I'd get a room near the airport and assume that the next day is basically a waste (unless you want to do some shopping at a mall, I guess, though there isn't one near the airport)

I agree your best bet is probably to get a hotel near the airport, and as ARULEs points out Jersey Gardens Mall is right near the airport, but I admit having no idea how shopping relates to your request to see some sights?

If the weather is clear your most scenic nearby sights would mostly be along the Hudson River: Liberty Park, downtown Jersey City, Hoboken, or along the top of the Palisades in Weehawken.
