One or 2 days at the shore?

Can anyone recommend a nice town along the shore to spend a day or two in early August? Someplace with a nice beach, a small town kind of vibe and maybe a boardwalk too? We're flying into and out of Newark and have family in New York and near East Orange but want to spend a little time at the shore as well. We'll be renting a car, but we have limited time and don't want to spend too many hours in the car!

Point Pleasant still have the small shore town feel with a board walk.

As the previous poster suggested, Point Pleasant Beach has a nice boardwalk (with games, rides, restaurants etc......., while the "downtown" of Point Pleasant is nice, I wouldn't really describe it as "small town vibe".

Spring Lake has a great "small town feeling"-- and has a nice stretch of boardwalk--but their boardwalk does not offer the attractions that Point Pleasant does.

Basically, if you have kids, I'd go to Point Pleasant Beach, but if it were only adults, I'd go with the Spring Lake option.

Just keep in mind the summer traffic (especially from Friday-Sunday), while some of these Shore towns seem only a few miles apart, heavy traffic could cause considerable delays.

Spring Lake for sure!

Stay in Spring Lake and then if you want the boardwalk fun it is a short drive to Pt. Pleasantl

Hewitt Wellington .is a very nice hotel in Spring Lake.
