Driving in S Africa

As part of our trip we are thinking of staying at the Montusi Mountain Lodge in the Drakensburgs, and then driving to Jo'Burg to pick up an evening flight back to London.

The Lodge web site says they are half way between Durban and Jo'burg.

Has anyone driven it? How long should I allow? If we leave around 9am can we get to Jo'burg at say 6pm the same day? Is it an easy drive/are the roads OK?

Presumably the rental car drop offs are in the airport at Jo'burg

Thanks to anyone who can give advice

We were in the berg just a week ago and stayed quite close to Montusi. The drive back from here to OR tambo is very straightforward and will certainly take much less than you suggest. No more than 4 hours even with a short stop or two. Of course road conditions dictate the exact time. I hope you are going later in the year as, a few days after we left last week (in gorgeous dry sunshine), the road up to Harrismith was closed for 14 hours for very heavy snow. Quite unusual even in mid-winter! See - www.news24.com/RelatedGalleryItemModal.aspx…

The short road from Montusi to the R74 is narrow but tarred and not too badly surfaced. Then the R74 up over the Olivershoek Pass is a main road although it has a few potholes - and after this week's weather probably more!

After 35km you are on the N5 then the N3 national highways. Good roads but there are a few roadworks sections that might hold you up a bit. This eventually turns into freeway (motorway) and links to the R24 ring road into the airport.

As I say, if you leave at 9am you should easily be able to make it by 1pm. So plenty of time for stops, even major roadworks but probably not deep snow!

When you reach OR Tambo just follow the signs to "Rental Car Return". This is inside the main Multi Storey Parking, from where you can walk to the departures check-in in 5 mins.

That's great. Thank you very much. We are travelling to from UK in November to Cape Town for 10 days or so and then touring fZululand from Durban so hopefully snow won't be a problem. Best of all it seems we will have time to stop for my morning fix of caffeine at around 11am!
