Getting to Shamwari Game Reserve from Port Elizabeth

Hi, we are 2 adults that will be arriving in Port Elizabeth mid afternoon for two weeks late November this year. We have booked one nights accommodation in Port Elizabeth then travel to Shamwari Game Reserve for two nights. After this we will be travelling the Garden Route for 6 nights to our hotel in Cape town.

What is the best way to get to shamwari from Port Elizabeth

We don't know whether to just hire a car at the airport on arrival and drive to the game reserve, that way we can leave the reserve and carry straight on to the garden route afterwards.

I have read that the roads in the reserve are unsuitable and that you are not insured for any possible damage to the hire car.

Any assistance appreciated

It will be more suitable to rent the car straight from the airport upon arrival and drive the distance to the reserve. Once the vehicle is on the premises, you will not use the vehicle for the game drives, it will stand still for 3days whilst your are there. From there then you can start with the garden route tour. And it will be much cheaper this way too. Just make sure from the car rental company what the details will be when driving on gravel road.

Thanks both, hired car from the airport it is.

Can you recommend a car hire company to use for our trip.

Also, we have not booked accommodation for our 6 days on the garden route yet. We were thinking,

2 days Knynsa or Plettenberg,

1 x Oudtshoorm

1 x Swellendam

1 x Hermanus

1 x Franschoek, then onto Camps Bay

It would be interesting to hear your views on our planned itinerary as it is still open for amendments.

Thanks again

You can have a look at Avis Car Rental Company, the leading car rental company in South Africa and have offices all over South Africa, www.avis.co.za . So far your itinerary looks great except the fact that you have a lot of 1nights at all the places. I would say skip the night in Swellendam and add it to Hermanus and make that 2nights. And also make the stop in Knysna and have a look at this website for ideas for accommodation along the route, www.safarinow.com . You can use the website to get an idea of what the accommodation places is all about and then get the places names, write them down that you like and try to get their website and contact them yourself and try to get a good deal.

If you have time try to get to Witsand on route to Cape Town.

Aroundabout Cars is a good firm.

Avis.co.za has an International Visitors Special with really good insurance and terms. That's what I suggest to my ciients. And staying in Swellendam would be a 'maybe' to me.. It's a neat little old town, but not a lot to do. If you come down to it from the R62, then you will drop down at Barrydale and pass through the spectacular Tradouw Pass. You will remember it for a long time...

lots of one night stops, too much packing and unpacking to be relaxing in my opinion.

How about Shamwari to Kynsna then 1 1/2 hours to Outdshorn

which will effectivley give you one and half days there with 2 nights stay. This is enough time to visit the attractions e.g. safari ostrich farm, Meerkat Adventure (before breakfast ) , Cango Caves, the local museum. Then drive to to Franshoek , it took us 5 hours coming in the opposite direction , we had lunch at Montagu and a coffee stop at Ronnies Sex Shop (not what the name implies) .

You then could have a couple of nights in Franschoek and from there take a day trip to Hermanus (1 1/2 hours scenic route) . Or make a day trip to Hermanus from Camps Bay, or stay longer in Camps Bay with day trips to both Franshoek and Hermanus.

You could miss out the night stay in PE and drive straight to Shamwari ( I think about an hour) but I am guessing you won't be up to it after the long haul from Scotland and that is why you are staying the night. .

We are going to the Western Cape again ,also in November and can recommend the following lovely guesthouses.

KYnsna- Amanzi Lodge

Outdshoorn - Yot club. .

Franschoek- Plumwood Inn

Hermanus- we are staying at Harbour House for the first time

Camps Bay,- we have had a great stay at Primi Royal which is a few minutes walk to the beach, the bus stop for the Hop On/Off bus and the eating places.

This year we are trying Ocean View, a mile or so outside Camps Bay, the main reason is that there is more outside space than the Primi Royale.

Colin,

I don't think anyone has a downer on PE, but it is not widely advertised overseas as a place to stay compared with say Kynsna, Cape Town , Durban.

Perhaps you can post some more ideas as many tourists use PE as their airport only to press on elsewhere simply out of ignorance of what PE has to offer.

Perhaps you could persuade your local Tourist Department to promote it more also.

We rented from Avis in SA and it was a good experience. If you can drive manual transmission the price is very low. Just like renting anywhere in the USA.
