Madikwe - pre trip relaxation

We have settled on a few days in Madikwe and are flying into SA from the UK - in December. From then on we have everything planned. But we had a few questions:

What kind of temperatures might we expect?

We will be quite tired from working + the long journey and would like to relax for 1 or two nights and also break the back of the J'Berg to Madikwe journey. Can anyone recommend anywhere? Hartbeespoort Dam looks nice but perhaps still leaves a 3 hour or so drive. Groot Marico looks lovely - is it worth the investment of a couple of hard earned holiday!

Is there that missing place out there - just the think TA is set up for - that we should not miss!

We are more Stoeps, views and bottle of wine than Sun City!

Looking forward to replies!

In the past we had the same dilemma & settled on Mount Grace Country hotel in Magaliesburg. MG has excellent rooms, with beautiful gardens & pool & the buffet in the evenings is superb. There's a good wine store in the village. It's just over an hour from JNB & a further 3 hours easy drive to Madikwe.

December is typically a hot month with afternoon showers.

You're only 30 minutes from Hartebeestpoort & also the cradle of human kind, both worth a visit.

If you'd looked back in this forum(not a lot of posts!!)--we've done Madikwe safaris 2X and each time we drive a few hours from JNB to Muldersdrift and stay at Misty Hills for a 2 days. They have a great spa and if you get the exec rooms, you can relax and enjoy--the drive to Madikwe is only a few more hours. If you start right after breakfast, you can settle in, cathc the first afternoon game drive.

Misty Hills is only about an hour from JNB and we arrive around 5-6pm, so we still have some evening driving. Its a good experience if you[ve never been to SA. I would personally NEVER go to Sun City--to me it sounds like disney w/casinos and tres touristy--or Atlantis...YUK for us.

I'm sorry that the next time we come for safari, we're going the other way and not anywhere near Misty Hills. Contact the parent company RALI and see what knd of deal you can get--the spa is GREAT!

There are a number of beautiful Guest lodges within a 10-15km radius of Magaliesberg.

Mount Grace is exquisite but obscenely expensive for the extras and Spa treatments.

There are also beautiful lodges in Maropeng, i.e. the Cradle Of humankind region, where you can attend the amazing museum and also explore the Sterkfontein caves

Madikwe is a great choice. There are daily flights into reserve and look at www,madikwecollection.co.za for excellent cross section of lodges

I will say again that the short flights from JNB to Madikwe airstrip are quite expensive, compared to a 4 hour drive in a rental car with several days stayover in the reserve.

The original poster asked about where the stop between Joburg and Madikwe, not how to fly there.

Is there some reason you keep pushing the flights and the collection website?

You've made this recommendation in another thread and I don't understand how it's applicable to this one. Sorry if I misunderstood otherwise.

Thanks everyone for the replies to date - as of the weekend we actually changed our plans slightly due to a recommendation from a SA colleague. We are actually going to spend a couple of days in Pretoria and then head straight to Madikwe.
