Need to go to Durango from either Santa Fe or Taos. Any opinions on which route would be the best, I think they both take about the same time. Thanks!!
I personally prefer the route on US 64 from Tres Piedras to Tierra Amarilla. Its one of the prettiest drives in New Mexico. Then, at Chama, you have the choice of staying on 64 and going through the Jicarilla Apache Reservation, and passed Salman Ruins; or through Pagasoa Springs which is also beautiful.
Finally, if you go through Abiquiu you go by Ghost Ranch (of Georgia Okeefe fame and also where City Slickers was filmed) and then by Echo Amphitheatre which can be a fun place to stop for a few minutes.
All routes are gorgeous. Most roads in New Mexico are close to empty. Therer are no steep narrow mountain passes. All are VERY different.
You cannot go wrong.
Have fun!!
Thank you for all the information- it really helps. I can't wait to see everything!
