Weather in March

We are considering a trip to Taos during the week of March 20. In these early planning stages, I have a few questions regarding weather and things to do at that time of year.

What can we expect weather-wise? I've checked average temperatures, but that's not telling me much. It looks like it could still snow at that time...how often do you have snow that late in the year? We're not skiers, but would appreciate the beauty of snow in that setting. The snowshoeing adventure looks interesting, as well.

It looks like hot air ballooning would be out at that time of the year, as would a trip to the Pueblo ( I believe I read somewhere that they were not open during the month of March). Other than a visit to the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Spa, we have nothing else that we are set on and would love suggestions from resident experts or those who have visited previously. We love to explore new places and are quite active - outdoor activites, combined with time to relax, and enjoy terrific food (fine dining or simple diner-type fare) and drinks would make for a perfect trip. Thanks for your suggestions!

Be sure to start looking at accomodations soon as well since that time of year gets busy as Spring Break brings skiers to this region.

Although it is said that "the mountains make their own weather" the long-range forecast this year is for below-normal snowfall. That still means that Taos proper may get 20" during the winter and Taos Ski Valley will get at least 200" if not more. We're hoping those forecasts are wrong.

It is a little-known fact that the Rocky Mountains, including the Southern Rockies here in the Taos area, receive most of their snowfall in the months of March and April. That shouldn't scare you off, however, since it's all a matter of elevation. Higher elevations above town get the big dumps and we take what we can get in town for the moisture. An agressive snow removal program in these parts ensures that roads are never closed for more than an hour or two at a time.

Bring layers of clothes. Any good outdoor store can help you pick what this means for the different activities you may want to do. We love the slopes (there are 5 ski areas within an hour's drive of here), but we also love the cross-country ski areas where snow-shoeing is huge as well. Right outside of town are some fine trails and other areas set aside for "non-motorized" activities.

The sun shines just about all the time here. Count on bringing hats and sunscreen for all kinds of outdoor stuff.

The restaurant and nightclub scene in Taos is lively for a small town. We're a year-round tourist resort town, so there's always something going on here that will entertain you. Be sure to check out the official visitor's guide at taosvacationguide.com.

We did Ojo Calente last year at the time you're thinking of going and it was really special. The crisp air and the hot springs make for a memorable time. We recommend the "Milagro Wrap" while you're there.

Be sure to ask for more details if you need them. . .

Although the exact dates change annually, Taos Pueblo is closed visitors from early March, through the third week in April. To visit Taos, and not see this national historical treasure would be a shame, but I know how available dates can be. Since there are also other ceremonial dates throughout the year that Taos Pueblo temporarily closes, it is always a good idea to check ahead with the pueblo's tourist office.

If the weather is pleasant (no snow on the highways), and you are flying in via Albuquerque, taking the "High Road" to Taos from Santa Fe would be a beautiful drive with its old, adobe villages enroute. This would include Pojoaque (north of Santa Fe) through Chimayo, Truchas, Penasco, and into Rancho de Taos (3 miles SW of Taos).

Another pretty drive is east through Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, and into Cimarron. If you love history, the old St. James Hotel in Cimarron is a must see, with its ghosts, and bullet holes in the bar's ceiling. It was originally built by the former White House chef to presidents Lincoln, and Grant.
