Phinda in mid December....any thoughts?

can you tell us what to expect weather and viewing wise at Phinda in December? Also we will be coming from RIchards Bay and leaving through Durban on route to Capetown. Is it best to drive, will it be interesting or shall we take the small flights from the two above mentioned places.

Thanks for sharing!

Phinda will be extremely warm, humid during December. Short thundershowers and a lot of rain is possible, but not guaranteed. December is the middle of the raining season in that part of the world.

But do not let that put you off. Phinda is in a beautiful area

A drive to Cape Town from Richards bay is defintely worthwile, to say the least. Once you leave the Kwazulu Natal province, some distance south of Durban, you will first be driving through the rugged but scenic Transkei area, and then though the Garden route. The latter is perhaps the most scenic area in the country.

Phinda is beautiful at any time of the year. Traditionally this is the 'rainy season' but it will also be hot and humid. The wild life in the reserve shouldn't be too much of a problem at this time of year as the game drives are early morning and late afternoon when it is cooler and the animals come out to drink at watering holes. Stunning reserve, Enjoy!

The drive down from Phinda to Durban is very scenic the closer you get to Dbn, veer off at Ballito and take the M4 coastal route, beautiful sea vistas and Indigenous bush and rivers with bird life etc. From Durban travel the South Coast, lots of quaint little towns the further South you go. Veer off Port Shepstone and travel inland passing the lovely Oribi Gorge and the high flats of zululand where you will see much of rural zulu life. Pass Kokstad and you have now entered Eastern Cape, travel thro Transkei, very beautiful, very rural, but a long drive. If you can stop off at Coffee Bay, exquisite scenery and still very untouched. continue on to PE and do the Garden Route all the way to CT. An amazing trip if you can do it. I blogged about the trip which we did last year and we went as far as George.
