Suggestions for Chobe on Budget?

I just cancelled 6 day trip to Botswana and Ichingo lodge because I really couldnt afford $11,000 for 2 people. Now we are looking at less expensive option to see Chobe since we will be at Victoria Falls. This is in August and we have those open nights. We are also doing self drive Kruger at end of trip, and maybe when in Capetown go to ADDO elephant park. Of course we want to see and experience as much wildlife as possible on our first African trip. Should we try to go to Chobe? And can we do on a budget? We are married this is our 40th anniversary, we do not need fancy at all.

Thanks,

If your budget and time available allow I would definitely include the Chobe National Park combined with your tour to Victoria Falls ( only 1hr drive from Kasane)

I note you have cancelled Ichingo - that is probably a good thing anyway, as Ichingo is a wonderful Lodge, specialising in fishing. It is not however a Lodge to base yourself for Chobe. Ichingo is in Namibia, situated on an island. For game viewing you take a boat trip along the banks of the Chobe National Park, but cannot enter it to do game drives. Your game viewing is therefore limited to wildlife that is at the water's edge.

If you are looking to avoid high cost accommodation, then consider these reasonably priced Lodges shown on TA:

tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g297318-c3-Kasane_Nor…

All these lodges can arrange your safari activities (game drives and Chobe River cruises ) in the Park, which is a 15minute drive away.

Try Serendipity also called Chobe Self Catering. Trish will sort you out with visits to Chobe N P and trips on the river at a very reasonable cost. You won't miss out and will have a great time. Very friendly comfortable accommodation. C

Hi, Addo is quite some distance from Cape Town (821 km or more than 9 hours driving). It's a bit of a hit and miss with the elephants. I've seen much larger herds in Kruger and in Etosha. Addo now also has about 4 lions so you can't get out of the vehicles anymore. I wouldn't suggest doing Addo. You can maybe rather focus on Table Mountain and fondle some fynbos. The Cape floral kingdom is the smallest of only 6 floral kingdoms in the world. Get to know the fynbos and unique plant species that occur here and save the charistmatic big 5 for Kruger and Botswana

Hi

I agree with Safari Child, if you are in the area, visiting Chobe is a must.

You can easily arrange for a transfer from Vic Falls to Kasane on the Border of the Chobe National Park.

There are many lodges to choose from in Kasane, from budget to luxury.

On the lower end of the scale, I would consider: The Old Post House (http://www.oldhousekasane.com/) or

Thebe River Safaris (theberiversafaris.com/THAhtml/accommodation.…).

Even the Chobe Safari Lodge is affordable to most. The lodges do all organise game drives, the sunset river cruise on the Chobe River is a great game viewing experience.

Enjoy your time in Africa.

Hi Charlie,

I just send for prices for your suggestion of Serendipity. Is there enought to do in the area and will we see alot of Chobe if we chose to stay there for 3-4 nights? Or would be better to stay in park. What places would you recommend. I'm torn as to what to do.

Thanks

Hi queenhelene,

Like yourself I am scrapping plans to Botswana this summer, refuse to pay crazy $. Returning to SA after 20+ years but with family. Some friends just camped in Kruger for $35/n. I'm waiting for details. Self drive other reserves. I remember Pilansberg was good for day trip. Looking into domestic flights to Cape Town & Vic Falls and quite pleased with the options and prices. Enjoying following this forum and getting good tips. Thanks.

Hi again you could spend a week in Chobe and still want more. To stay inside the park it's only camping at Ihaha or the very expensive lodge. Kasane is a great base and you can do day trips in the park, boat trips on the river and a day trip to Victoria Falls. The Chobe river is outstanding for game, hundreds of elephants, herds of Roan antelope, huge crocodiles. Sunsets are so beautiful. Then you can eat at places like The Old House in the evening. We found it safe to walk around. There are lots of photographs of Chobe etc in my photo book, look under my forum contributions to read it. You will have a great time. C
