Okavango on a South Africans budget

I am looking to travel to the Okavango in August/September. Unfortunately that is peak season but thats the only time we can get away! Can anybody reccommend lodges that are comfortable yet not extreamely expensive. Or else a tour company that offers good packages.

A "budget lodge" is an oxymoron. If you are on a budget, consider either a self-drive or a mobile safari. Three of us did a mobile safari last August with www.bushcampsafari.com

Eric@bushcampsafaris.com can help you with a very cost-effective safari. Their camp in teh Okavango is so isolated and beautiful, you will be amazed. The food is great, the wildlife is fantastic, and the overall experience is memorable.

You could try Island Safari Lodge or The Old Bridge Backpackers in Maun.

They both have reasonably priced accommodation and also well priced excursions into the delta in mokoro.

The 11 day Fish Eagle Safari operated by Bushways Safaris might suit you and for a more budget option you could try Livingstone Trails' 7 day delta safari

Most lodges and tour operators in Botswana are expensive for South Africans, as they typically cater for foreigners. Gemma gave some good tips. The cheapest option for South African isself drive and camping.

Everything will mainly depend on what your budget is. There are some lodges that offer last minute rates normally for travel 14 days out. Problem with this is that this is more like taking risks unless you are lucky enough to find some cancellations by that time frame! However, there are lodges with rates ranging from USD395 pppn, even around this time, inclusive of all meals, selected drinks, game activities. But you still have to add on flights...

I know it's always nicer to view the delta and stay there as opposed to doing short excursions. But it's a good thing you are planning now and this will give you ample time to weigh all the pros and cons.
