Driving during winter fr Boston to Niagara Falls

We are planning to drive from Boston to Niagara Falls some time in mid Dec but are concerned with the snow and stuff. We have considered flying but with luggage and children in tolls, will be troublesome to check in and out versus putting them all in a SUV. With no experience driving on snowy road, we are looking for some advice, and suggestions for stopovers on route to Niagara (i read Binghamton is good) and on our return from Niagara to Pennsylvania. Thanks in advance for your usual helpfulness!

Fortunately, the route you will take is one of the better maintained roads in the winter, so on the off chance you run into a major snow event, it won't be too bad. This weekend unusual event aside , you are more likely to run into lake effect snow than anything else. Lake effect is very localized, very heavy snow common to the western NY area, specifically between Syracuse and Buffalo. Id the lake effect machine is up and running, you will encounter one to ten mile stretches of snow.

If you have never driven in winter conditions remember a couple of basics - go slow and maintain a good distance to the vehicle in front of you. Four wheel drive will help keep you on the road, but it doesn't help with braking.

As for stopping, Albany is probably your best bet, but is less than halfway. The problem is that after Albany, there are few good hotels until at least Utica, another ninety miles away. There are some good options in Johnstown/Gloversville, but theories a good twenty minutes of the thruway.

Where in Pennsylvania will you be going? Many different routes from Niagara...

EDIT: reread the original post, you should be going nowhere near Binghamton on your route, anything you great out read to the contrary is wrong. You will be taking interstate 90 for the vast majority of your route.

Hi Mclee,

We were planning to drive down to touristy places and U of Penn after Buffalo and then southwards to Florida.

The NY posts freak me out, now my plan is stuck...
