Is it worth doing a day trip to East Hampton in February?

Hi there, we are visiting New York from 23 Feb to 1 Mar from Australia and thought it would be nice to see East Hampton for a day. Is there a day trip that you can recommend? Will it be too cold? What are the best places to visit given the time of year? Many thanks for your assistance!

East Hampton is pretty far for a day trip -- about 3.5 hours from NYC (each way), depending on time of day and traffic. And yes, it will be cold. We are having an unusually mild winter, but even still, temps are likely to be in the 30s-40s at that time of year. And many of the smaller shops in EH are now "summer pop-ups," which means they will not be open while you are there. (The larger shops, like Tiffany, and those that cater to locals, like Book Hampton, are open year-round.)

Having said that, East Hampton is beautiful (link to pics below), and if you do decide to go, post back and we can provide restaurant and lodging info!

Thank you for your prompt reply. EH certainly does look beautiful! Given the distance and limited time of a day, would you suggest we go to South Hampton instead? Are there just as many dinning and site setting spots to visist? Also can we get by with the bus or do you suggest we hire a car? Many thanks again.

I'd say East Hampton is your best bet imo. The bus stops close to the center of town and it's the prettiest village. Southampton is only marginally closer so the real issue is do you want to give up a day to go out there at all. The bus ride in each direction is 2 1/2- 3 hrs. so you'll be travelling for ~ 6 hrs.

makes the trip easy. There are some organized daytrips but I don't know that they run during Feb. and they may stop in places that don't interest you. You can rent a car which will give you more flexibility to see some of the other villages or you could get a taxi to take you to say Sag Harbor from East Hampton which is also charming in a different way.

I'd strongly suggest if you do the trip, you do it on a weekend day when more shops and restaurants are open. Many places close midweek at this time of year.
