Is Ksar Ghilane worth it?

Is it worth spending a night in Ksar Ghilane inbetween visiting the areas around Tozeur and Tataouine or it is just a tourist trap? We have visited the sahara near Merzouga in Morocco before and smaller areas of sand dunes in Iran and India and always enjoyed spending the night in the dunes but was wondering if Ksar Ghilane offers anything different and it is partiuclarly beautiful there? We could just take a series of louages from Tozeur to Tataouine which I guess would be a logn day and doesn't offer the chance to stop places along the way so was considering a 4WD trip which would offer the chance to stop more places and experience the desert scenery. Most 4WD trips from Tozeur to Tataouine seem to involve an overnight stop at Ksar Ghilane so was wondering if this option is worth it. Alternatively is it possible to hire a 4WD and driver in Tozeur to go to Chott el Jerid, Douz/Zaafrane, Matamata, Toujane and Medenine on the way to Tataouine?

Thanks in advance for the advice?

There is a negative travel advice for the whole region in the south of Douz and Matmata.

(reason is possibility for fighting and kidnapping in the area's near the algerian and lybian border)

Nothing happened till now but I suppose you don't want to be first victim.

In theory you can safe visit Matmata, Chott El Jerid and Tozeur

Thanks for the advice!

Do you think we should be taking the FCO warning seriously? Tataouine and the ksour is one of the places I was most looking forward to visiting so would be a shame to give it a miss. Do you think we would be safe visiting with a local tour agency?

Yes, i would take it seriously, its put in place for a reason.

Are you based in the UK?

If so, the FCO website for travellers from the UK, i would take notice of the warnings, after all its best to be safe than sorry.

Their have been lots or riots and manifestations in the Tataouine area...

Personally I would not go there on this moment.

No. I was in Tataouine end of March for the festival of the Ksours. Everything went well and it was fantastic. Chennine, Ksours, etc were all safe and really worth a visit. Too much negative propaganda towards Tunisia. It is more dangerous in New York and Central Park than Tataouine!!

You DO NOT need to take a trip from TOZEUR to visit Ksar Ghilane. When in Tozeur take half day local trip to visit Chebika, Tamerza and ong Zmel (Shott el Gharsa) From Tozeur take louage to Douz (via Kebili) the problem may be stop in the middle of Shott ela Jerid (try to negotiate it with driver) When in Douz try to find local Tours to Ksar Ghilane area. There are more travelers in Douz and more agencies than in Tozeur. Anyway it can be still hard as excursions go irregularly while private tours can be costly. The other possibility to visit Ksar Ghilane is to get by louages to Matmata (from Douz again via Kebili) and from there rent 4WD. Matmata is the closest "civilized" town from Ksar Ghilane. Thanks all for the helpful responses.

In the end we decided to visit Ksar Ghilane and Tatouine area and are glad we did - Chenini and the Ksour were definately a highlight of our trip to Tunisia and we felt completely safe in this area (thanks #5 for the reassurance). The British government seems to be one of the few that has a problem with tourists visiting this area as there were still package tourists from most other countries visiting the more popular places in this area as well as plenty of French and Italian tourists travelling (semi)-independently..

We stayed one night in Ksar Ghilane at the campsite next to the hot springs which was fine for a night - accommodation in large berber tents, average food, below average facilities

We also spent 2 nights (one extra as one of us was sick) in Chenini at Kenza Residence which I would highly recommend as Chenini was one of the best places we visiited and much more peaceful early in the morning and late in the day. Good food, friendly hosts and accomodation in atmospheric if basic cave rooms.

Finally we spent a night in Tatouine itself in order to make an early start the next day. Here we stayed at Hamza Residence which is actually much nicer than it looks from the outside and clean, friendly and cheap if fairly basic.

Hope this helps! Detailed reviews of all of these to come soon on Tripadvisor...
