There are an increasing number of pet friendly vacation rentals available in the Southold/ Greenport area. Some people with allergies need a pet free zone, others would never travel without their pets. It's a trade off for the property owner who will lose bookings whichever decision they make.

The renter of a pet friendly home can expect to be asked to sign a separate pet contract, based on one by the Humane Society. The pet contract will require the owner to identify the pet by breed, weight and age and agree to abide by certain rules, such as not allowing the animal into bedrooms, or onto any soft furnishings in the home, disposing of waste properly and not leaving the dog food outside to attract critters and so on.

Since deer ticks are common on the North Fork, it is in everyone's best interests to make sure the pet is treated with Frontline or similar tick prevention medication prior to arrival. Pet owners need to bring their own pet bedding, food bowls, old towels and anything else they may need. A dog that is crate trained is more likely to be accepted than a dog that is not crate trained, but that is certainly not a requirement.

Additional end of stay cleaning is usually required to remove every last hair, and to restore the home to it's former state as if no pet had ever been there, but even that is not routinely charged.

Cats are more of a problem. They show annoyance by urinating in a very prominent spot, which may be on a pristine bed cover or the middle of a carpet. It's also impossible to keep them off the soft furnishings. I do not know anywhere that will accept a cat, but there are many dogs that are accommodated routinely on the North Fork in private rental homes.
