Highlights of the Finger Lakes / Ithaca?

In two weeks time we will be staying in Painted Post for one night (as a stopover on our way from Gettysburg to Niagara Falls) and would like to do a driving tour of the Finger Lakes either that evening or the next morning on our way on to Niagara Falls, to see as much of the highlights as we can whilst we are there.

Please would you be able to suggest a good driving tour for either of these options and suggest places that would be worth stopping at enroute to get a good feeling of what the Finger Lakes has to offer?

We wouldn't want to visit any wineries, but nice towns / villags good views, beaches and food would be great.

Several options depending on your route:

visit Corning Glass Cneter or the Rockwell museum in Corning

visit Watkins Glen State Park in the town of the same name (around 20 miles north of Painted Post)

stop in Hammonsport (south end of Keuka Lake) for lunch and perhaps visit the Glenn Curitss Museum if that interests you take a drive around the lake (great viewa). There is a small beach in Hammondsport and Keuka Lake State Park with beach access along the lake

head towards the city of Canandaigua on Rt. 21 (west side of the lake of the same name) for one of the best Finger Lakes views

visit Stony Brook State Park (Dansville) or the "Grand Canyon of the East" - Letchworth State Park (Geneseo)

Have fun!

If I can talk you into it, I would suggest you drive 1 hour north and stay in Ithaca rather than Painted Post (unless you have people you are visiting in Painted Post). Ithaca is in the heart of the Finger Lakes while Painted Post is in the Southern Tier. There will be much more for you to do in Ithaca, plus it would be a better base for a driving tour of the region. Ithaca has some of the best restaurants in the region and there are a number of beautiful state parks surrounding it that should not be missed including Robert H Treman State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park and, driving north along the west side of Cayuga Lake, Taughannock Falls State Park.
