Lake George weekend trip in the fall?

We do a 3 day weekend trip every fall, and are considering Lake George this year. However, a few people that we know that have gone said it's more of a summer destination- a lot of things close after Labor Day. Is that true? I assumed there would be loads of pumpkin picking, hay rides and such in the area for our 2 year old, as well some great leaf peeping for us.

Lake George is a great fall location. We used to go every Columbus Day weekend and the leaves were at it's peak then. The Great Escape is still opened on the weekends. They have an Oktoberfest at the end of September and they have Fright Fest for Halloween. Go on their websites for dates and information. The boats still give cruises on the lake and all the restaurants are still opened. The only thing you will find closed are the pools at the hotels. There is an indoor water park opened year round at the Great Escape Lodge. It's free to guests but they sell day tickets for visitors.

LG is very nice in the fall. The first weeks after Labor Day the lake is still quite warm, the nights are cool and the days are warm too. I have been swimming as late as Columbus Day weekend many times over the years. As BBmom stated some things do have limited hours but for the most part until Columbus Day most everything is still open. You can have a real nice time in LG in the fall. You never know when the leaves will be turning though.

LG is a fantastic fall destination.

After Columbus Day, things will slow down considerably.

A few suggestions:

Try to fit in some apple picking!

Harvest Fest at Gore Mountain is Columbus Day Weekend. They also have scenic Gondola rides. http://www.goremountain.com/

Your 2 year old may also enjoy a scenic train ride:

The cruise boats already mentioned are a wonderful way to see the lake in the fall:

Have fun!

Thank you so much for the replies! We were looking to stay in a nice B&B or cabin or something...it doesn't have to be right in Lake George- we don't mind driving at all, since we'll just be there for the weekend. I've been looking at a few in the surrounding area, but they are either a) booked already for the first weekend in October (understandably) or b) don't allow children. Any ideas? We're looking for a place with a little bit of charm, not just a typical hotel room.

Look at Antigua on Plum Point. They have cabins right on the lake. It's only a 5 minute drive to the Village. It's on the other side of the lake directly across from Erlowist.
