best driving route to Lake Placid from Toronto

Anyone know the fastest route to Lake Placid from Toronto. I drove to Lake Placid several years ago, and it took way longer than I thought. It's only about 500 km from Toronto, but driving through Adirondack Park and all the little Towns on the way slowed the driving. Any suggestions?

I drive from Toronto to Lake Placid all the time and totally enjoy the route. It takes 5 hours, but it breaks down to 3hrs on the 401 and 2 on the Secondary Highways in Upstate NY. There are usually no cars ahead of you or behind you once you get into the US. I always go to the Ogdensburg's border as opposed to the Gananoquay border, even tho the Gananoquay border is a more pleasant drive, because a busy day at Ogdensburg means 1 car ahead of you. You head south on 812 to Canton, 56 to South Colton, 3 to Tupper Lake (there is a flashing light and you make a left, drive 50 feet and see a Stewarts (Gas and Coffee), make another left. #3 All the way to Placid. When you pass thru Saranac Lake, they start calling it Placid/Saranac... It is not Lake Placid until you see the Emergency Vet's office on the left, the plaza with TOPS grocery on the right, the brand new Lake Placid Lodge on the left..... Continue until you come to the end of the road and turn right for Main St action and left for Mirror Lake Lodge. This road will go right around Mirror Lake. It is a fabulous destination! Have a great trip!

We need to drive from Saranac Lake to Buffalo and arrive by early morning Dec 23 (we have an early morning flight to New York)- prob drive and stay Buffalo Dec 22. Will the road be open between Saranac Lake and Watertown and is this the best way to go. Will the road be snowy? Any information on this drive would be very appreciated as we will in a city that never has snow and we obviously are hesitant to drive in snowy/icy conditions.

ANother way.....I live in Lake Placid and think that if you stay on 401 to Cornwall ON then cross and follow rt 37 to Malone , pick up rt 30 to Paul Smiths then follow rt 86to LP it's a little easier. ( imo) BTW, It's not a TOPs Grocery store it's a Price Chopper.

< they start calling it Placid/Saranac... > It is actually SaraPlacid and it is not an official name. There is Ray Brook between Saranac lake and Lake Placid

OK and if we really really want to get it right it's not an emergency VETs place on the left it's a human Urgent care facility on the left, The new Whiteface Lodge ( not Lake Placid Lodge which burned down a while back ) on the left and the Mirror Lake INN , not Lodge if you turn left off Main Street. But who's counting ????
