December from NYC scenic route to Anywhere.

My Husband, 16 year old child and I will be on vacation in NYC until 21st December 2009. Could anyone recommend a scenic safe trip for 6 days by hire car that we would enjoy, bearing in mind somewhere OPEN on Christmas Day to Eat! As most places we have inquired in Jackson/Conway are closed. Thanks

Without considerable winter driving experience I would NOT suggest driving anywhere.

FYI...NYC to Niagara Falls is approx. 420 miles / 670 km.

Best Regards

It may not be the best idea to make a really long term schedule as your final destination may depend on the weather. Pick an area, perhaps southern New Hampshire or Vermont to use as a base and make day trips from there. It will take some looking to find a place for Christmas dinner as a lot of places try to let staff enjoy the holiday with their families. But there are some inns and restaurants that will be open for dinner. What kinds of things are you looking to do or see?
