You'll get different opinions from everyone....so here's mine...

NY Side is not as nice as the Canadian side. I find it rather dull..not a lot to do....and the views are "okay".

Canadian Side features an amazing gorge-side walking promenade that affords amazing views of the US Falls and the ability to actually walk right up to the precipice of the Canadian Horseshoe falls. The ground actually trembles under your feet from the force of the falls!! The Canadian side is much more built up with tourists in mind....Clifton Hill is a very popular area, chock full of attractions like Mdm. Tussaud's Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Haunted Houses, all types of museums featuring daredevils feats of people who've gone over the Falls in barrels, etc..... lots of restaurants...hotels, etc.

You can access Maid of the Mist from either side. This is a "must do" activity if you ask me.

Hi shellnrich;

Definitely the Canadian side ! Why ?

• Just about every view YOU have seen of the Falls was taken from the Canadian side.

• Cleaner

• Much more to see and do.

You may want to read this previous post about the same question.

Here is an interactive map of Niagara Falls Canada.

The view is facing the US side, with the Fallsview area on the right side, and Clifton Hill on the upper left. Click on a building, and a new page will open with a description and details.

I am going to say Canada as well. I have been to NF twice, first staying in NY and then Canada the second time. When we stayed in NY, we were looking for a good place to eat near the falls. I asked one of the local store workers...and her answer was, "cross the bridge to Canada." That pretty much says it all.

Having said that, I do recommend seeing the falls from the American Side. It gives you a different view...and more of a park setting I think. It is less crowded also and the Cave of the Wind attraction is pretty fun (although you don't really go into any caves). I also enjoyed walking across the bridge to Goat Island above the rapids leading to the American Falls. The idea of being right above the falls just as it is about to over is pretty neat.

Another vote for Canada. The Canadian side offers better views of the falls, cleaner environment, beautifully landscaped parks with flowers, restaurants and many many attractions. My husband likes to refer to the canadian side as being more "disney-eque" side of the falls. The NY side is a little run down as far as the town itself goes. It has a lot of potential, but was lacking the ambiance I was expecting. The park itself was nice, but there was not much to do outside of the actual Niagara Falls State Park.

We spent 3 days in Niagara Falls & it was perfect...we did both NY and CANADA. There was actually a thing or two more that we may have done if we stayed one more day. There is much much more to see and do in Canada in my opinion. There is a lot of "touristy" stuff that you can do in the Clifton Hill area (wax museum, haunted house, mini-golf, hershey store, sky wheel, skylon tower, ripley's believe it or not, guiness records, Midway, etc) in addition to seeing the Falls tours (Journey behind the falls, whirlpool aerocar, whirlpool jet boat, whitewater walk, maid of the mist canada). There is also the IMAX theater with the Daredevil Gallery & National Geographic store, Rossi Glass, Souvenier City, Butterfly Conservatory, Botanical Gardens, Centennial Lilac Garden, Floral Clock, Marineland, Bird Kingdom, a waterpark or two, Queen Victoria Park, and etc in Canada. Some people also like to visit the wineries & Niagara on the Lake in Canada too.

In NY you can go to whirlpool state park and devil's hole park in addition to seeing everything at the Niagara Falls State Park (cave of the winds, maid of the mist USA & observation tower, visitor center, bridal veil falls, terrapin point, three sisters island). There is also the free Daredevil Museum (in a souvenier shop in NY) and the Aquarium of Niagara.

If you like casinos..there is the Fallsview Casino in Canada or the Seneca Casino in NY.

You CAN get some good views of the Falls from the NY side via the Maid of the Mist & Observation Tower...should you NOT be able to go to Canada. BUT...I would definately make an attempt to get over to the Canadian side...since the view of the Falls from Canada is so spectacular! Both sides have something different to offer. Canada offers the vast amount of attractions & delightful "disneyeque" environment. But, if you like nature trails where you can hike and just take in the natural park enviroment..then the NY side will provide you the opporunity to take in the Falls "all-natural". A blend of both NY and Canada was a perfect match for us!

Let me give you a contrary view; Not that I am biased to Niagara Falls from US side. From the US side, you can touch and feel the water. People enjoy Cave of the Winds. I think the cave of winds from Canadan side is not that exiting. About the view itself, you get the same view when you take the Maid of the Mist boat tour. I vote for the US side.

The canadian side view is lot better; but it's boring view. Water keep falling !!!

If you are planning to take skylon that's a different experience.

All other attractions that others suggested are not so great at niagara falls. Which is the best place to see wax museum ? For sure, not the Niagara Falls. As tourists come to this place, every small mom and pop store want to make business - and they comeup with these fancy ideas of opening a wax museum etc; It's not worth the money.

TAMHP. you are correct that Cave of the Winds isn't very exciting from the Canadian side, since it is located on the U.S. side. Likewise, Marineland, Skylon, Skywheel, Fallsview hotels and restaurants, Imax, Butterfly Conservatory, Aero Car, White Water Walk and Bird Kingdom aren't very exciting from the U.S. side.

And I really didn't know that Ripley's, Guiness and Tussauds were mom and pop operations.

Thanks for your note.

When we go to Falls, we see the falls - experience it to the fullest extent.

In my view, going over skylon is the best part (from Canada); touching the water by cave of the winds is the best part (from NY, USA). Everything else, doesn't matter - whether it is in NY or from Ontario.

About the other exiting things - if we are talking about a global tourist (most of them are global)....they would like to see the "sea world" in florida, Skywheel in London; About all other stuff - Imax, Butterfly Conservatory.....all are very small things; Less than 10% of the tourists cover that. And those are not the best of Niagara.

Again, the Ripley's is best in LA, Tussauds of London/NY are the best.

So, if the visitor has already gone to Florida, visiting the Marineland is a joke. Similarly if he is from London, the Skywheel at Niagara is a joke.

All we need to guide the visitors is tell them the two or three things that are best in Niagara. None of the people in UK or Florida can create a Niagara. We can create a sea world or sky wheel ;)

Now, now... I appreciate BOTH of your opinions regarding BOTH of the falls. I live in Los Angeles, where Marineland was a childhood attraction until all the animals died and I've been to SeaWorlds in both San Diego and Orlando. I am interested in touching the falls (the U.S. side), but also want a great view from the height that the wheel at Clifton offers. The tallest ferris wheel we have here is on Santa Monica Pier and it doesn't do Niagara justice. I am interested in the immensity of the horseshoe falls as well as Cave of the Winds in NY. I thank you for your guidance and look forward to many more travel options from both of you!
