Wind & ferries

We visited Lanzarote in March 2014 and wondered whether Sal is as windy in February/March. I keep reading that there is a constant 'breeze' etc. but no real mention of how strong it is. We did a lot of sight seeing on Lanzarote so the wind didn't matter, but we wouldn't have enjoyed it as a 'beach' type destination only, which for the most part Sal sounds like. I know there is something to see on the island, but possibly not that much over a two week period.

Are ferries expensive/frequent to nearby islands?

Dec to Feb is usually the windiest time, blowing around 25 - 30km/hr, it starts easing off in March but not by much. The least windy season (our summer) still sees winds of around 18km/hr so it's never just 'breezy'!

You can see most of the sites on Sal in a maximum of 2 days so not much to see. There are excursions like boat trips, sand dune buggies etc to do but they're around €40 per person so not cheap. Apart from that, yes there is the beach but the winds make it tricky to lay out on (sand blowing everywhere) and there is little natural shelter. It is a very, very beautiful beach though!

Boats to Boa Vista (the nearest island) are based on a day return excursion only - again, a tourist trip. Ferries to islands further afield are cargo only 7 the ride is rough, plus slow. You can fly between islands but it's hit and miss in terms of the airline (TACV) - they're not too reliable & it's not cheap.

I'd say 2 weeks isn't long enough to island hop too far (by plane) - you could perhaps manage one island - and if you are looking for more of an active holiday, you may find it too long to just stay on Sal.

Hope that helps.

Many thanks for a very helpful reply, it's answered a lot of queries in our minds. We'd love to see Sal but will have to think about whether there's enough to do there and if we want another windy holiday so soon after the last one!
